The Sofitel Chicago Water Tower

What are the reviews for this new hotel? Has anyone stayed there? Would you recommend this hotel over the Swissotel? Thanks!

Short answer: Sofitel hands down.

I'm local so haven't stayed, but have had drinks at the hotel. A little too contemporary decor for my taste; however, great location and very hip bar. Also, brand new so you can't beat the fact that the rooms haven't been slept in by thousands yet.

Not a fan of the Swissotel location as you're a bit isolated, except from Navy Pier (it doesn't look far on the map, but is a pain when you have to walk a few blocks to Michigan Ave and then cross the bridge to get anywhere). The Sofitel is in a great location right off Michigan Avenue and close to great shopping and restaurants.

The Sofitel is trying to compete with the other luxury hotels in the area, but rates are lower because they're trying to fill it up.

Thanks.....I booked the Sofitel at $119 a night for 4 nights. Good deal!

Linda,
I live 2 blocks away from Hotel Sofitel and it blows the Swissotel away. Centralized location, better rooms and upscale atmosphere.
You will love it and the service is fantastic. There are great restaurants and shopping within walking distance and you got a great price for a luxury hotel.

It's been a while since I've been in downtown Chicago. Is the Sofitel the old Ritz Carlton in the Water Tower or where exactly is it located. Have stayed at the Swisshotel and it is OK---not special and down in the Loop instead of North Michigan Ave.

Isn't a sad commentary on how sedentary people have become when the Swisshotel is considered too far of a walk
(a "pain" no less) to North Michigan Ave shopping?

The location of the new Sofitel is far superior to the Swissotel. It is a new property at 20 E. Chestnut (between State Street and Rush St.; Chestnut is a block or two north of Chicago Avenue) which is reasonably quiet area only a short, pleasant walk to many shops and restaurants.

Swisshotel is located in a strictly high-rise area and the streetscape is rather sterile. It is closer to Grant Park/Art Institute, about five blocks to the beginning of the shopping district.

To OhNo: I live in the suburbs and walk almost 2 miles to work from the train everyday after I run 3 miles in the morning so I don't think I am sedentary. However, I usually spend the night downtown a couple of times a year. One time being at Christmas to shop with my girlfriends. We make at least one trip back to our room with packages. I would much rather be close to my hotel than walk all the way to the Swissotel or take a cab (and then back again). Lots of these packages are heavy especially when we go to American Girl or the Pottery Barn.
