The Price is Right

I am looking for anyone who has been to tapings of the TV show The Price is Right. A group of us is planning to go and want to know if it is worth the wait, where to stay, etc.

GoTravel Nov 15th, 2006 02:18 PM

With Bob's retirement, you'll need to get in line in the middle of the night to get in.

bigtyke Nov 15th, 2006 03:13 PM

my sister went with a group from Yuma, AZ. They just went for the day. She had a great time and one gal from the group won prizes

lynnejoel1015 Nov 15th, 2006 05:10 PM

I would do it. We live within walking distance of the studios and shamefully never have gone.

I hear he does a greyhound special on Tuesdays ('cause he's a big proponent of animal rescue, etc), and I've always wanted to take a Tuesday off and bring my greyhound but alas.... never have.

Come on Down Jen...
I was just on the Price is Right a couple of months ago and it was a blast! I was picked and it was a dream of a lifetime..sad, I know but to meet the man, Bob is an honor..
I got the tickets on-line, parked at the Farmers Market structure and got in line at 5:30AM and this was in July so it was pretty packed with the summer crowd but with the man retiring, I am sure it will be packed..
The Farmers Daughters Hotel is directly across the street and I would suggest staying there unless you live close by..
The key to getting picked after you have made it into the group of around 300+ is to be very animated and gregarious..when you walk into the studio you are so blown away because for one, it is really small inside and second, it looks like a small border town in Mexico exploded with all the Hot Pink and Neo Green with bad stucco everywhere...
It was one of the best experiences of my life..
I ((L)) Bob Barker!

Jen253 Nov 15th, 2006 05:39 PM

Thanks for the input everyone! I am kind of curious about the posts about how crowded it will be now that Bob has announced his retirement. How early do you think we should get there? My friend is flying in from New York City to do this so I want to have the best possible chance of getting in the audience (and hopefully in Contestants' Row!)

travelinwifey Nov 16th, 2006 07:04 AM

Sorry I don't have specifics but I went to college with someone whose dad won the big prize at the end, over 30k in prizes. He traveled to LA from his small hometown and it was a big story. Hope you get picked, if I had a chance I'd try it!

GoTravel Nov 16th, 2006 07:06 AM

Seriously, like 3AM.

ustwo Nov 16th, 2006 07:28 AM

Jen253, I am a bit jealous, always wanted to go, but probably won't. However, just in case, I have a few more questions!
Do you send for tickets ahead of time, or can you get them there? When you send for them are they good for only one day? Is it just the first 300 each day or do they tape more than one show each day? So if when you arrive, there are 500 people you just stick around for the next taping, if there is one?

The Farmer's Daughter is tragically hip but quite comfortable; it's a fave of PIR visitors and contestants - in the lobby there's a big display of Polaroid pictures of PIR winners who stayed there (maybe a good luck move?)

Yes, O-dark-thirty for getting in line.

TahitiTams Nov 16th, 2006 09:35 AM

Being a recent contestant on PIR, after waiting on the sidewalk with a billion other people, you are giving a colored piece of paper and then we waited in the area and then they give you a number and if it is under 320 or close to that then you are in but you have to wait to be interviewed and that is the last thing before you go in.. go to www.CBS.com
and you can get all the answers..

Jen253 Nov 16th, 2006 11:42 AM

Thanks again everyone! I am excited to go and I think we're going to try to get in two days in a row (since we'll be there anyway!) The Farmers Daughter suggestion is a good one, thanks!

Ustwo, to get tickets, you can request in writing (I think you can get 10 a day this way) or via email (4 tickets)for a specific day and taping. The tricky part is that the ticket will not guarantee you a spot in the audience. From there it is a first-come, first-served type of deal. If you read TahitiTams response, it sounds pretty much like what they describe on the website. I don't think it is possible to try for the next showing on the same day since they engineer the ticket pick-up times to avoid that. Anyone ever attempted this?

I'm curious to see if anyone has gone with a group of 20 or more. On the site it says you will be guaranteed a seat and can arrive later. Anyone have first hand experience with this? Also, do you think this will limit the chances of the people in the group to get on the show? (One person's opinion on the matter is that the producers will be unlikely to select more than one person from a large group.)

TahitiTams Nov 16th, 2006 12:15 PM

HI Jen..
PIR Loves groups!! Also, your group almost always guarantees someone being picked and if I recall, they have group tickets..just have to call..
Farmers Daughter Hotel is the way to go and keep in mind that once you are a contestant on the PIR, even if you don't get up on stage you are banned for life..
:(
I am so excited for you and your group!!!

lvk Nov 16th, 2006 02:18 PM

TahitiTams,

What did you win? Did the episode air yet? Enquiring minds want to know! :D

TahitiTams Nov 16th, 2006 04:13 PM

Hey lvk..
I won a gorgeous greenhouse and it already aired..overshot the wheel but hey, I had the time of my life and watching the show with my posse of fans that cheered and hugged me all the way down the aisle is hysterical..

tennislvr1 Nov 16th, 2006 08:31 PM

my son's girlfriend just happened to go along with a group of kids from a local acting college to a taping of PIR last week.

Lo and behold, they picked my son's girlfriend...she was shocked to say the least. She's extremely attractive, wore pig tails and is young compared to other contestents (she's 19). She said if you are outgoing they look at you as a potential contestant. She won a ton of stuff and BOB announced the next day that he was retiring.

It airs January 4th - she said thats when she'll figure out what she won...she was so excited that she can't remember a thing!

The only way in is to get a group of 20 together. You can try to round up some people online, and on the day before the show you're sure to meet people at the FD Hotel that will join your "group". Call yourselves "MOMS FOR PET NEUTERING" or something like that.

Jen253 Nov 18th, 2006 08:42 AM

Thanks for the advice everyone! Congrats to TahitiTams on your winnings! I'm sure we'll be able to get a group of 20 together--it not, I'll take Tracey's advice and round them up online. Wish us luck!

I was on the Price is Right back in 1991. I'm dating myself here. I wrote in for our tickets and they sent them in the mail for a specific date. We arrived very early (approx 5 AM) to wait in line. At that time they taped two shows a day. I don't know if this is still the same. Even though we arrived so early, we were in the second taping. We waited in a seated line for hours before the taping. They had an area where the line goes past the show staff/producers before you enter the room where it is taped. They staff talks to everyone for a minute. I think they determine who they want to pick from this and from just observing everyone in line. I was the last person called to "come on down". I didn't bid close enough to get up on stage but I did go home with consolation prizes. I got an Oreck vaccuum, a Krupps coffee maker and a coffee grinder and a juicer. We still use the grinder. To answer your question, YES YES YES it is worth the wait. When it airs, make sure you tape the show. Even if you aren't called on stage, you should be able to see yourself in the audience. I hope you have a great time!

tracys2cents Nov 19th, 2006 11:14 AM

Watch the show several times and note the colors that people are wearing...the ones who are picked to come on down. Certain colors/stripes etc don't blend in well with the set, and you'll never see contestants in those colors. i haven't watched enough to know the patterns & color schemes that they like...and I'm sure personality at the interview has more to do with it...but pay attention to what you're wearing to increase your odds of getting on TV.
