The Pikes Peak Cog Railway will not reopen for the 2018 season

A head's up for visitors planning trips to the Colorado Springs area - the Pikes Peak Cog Railway will not be opening for the 2018 season, or for the foreseeable future.

That is a real lost. I saw that in the Post several weeks that the deferred maintenance was catching up to them. We rode it last Fall on a whim and am now glad that we did.

I worry that the closure will mean more car traffic on Highway 24 as it'll be the only way to access the Peak - last year was a nightmare - traffic backed up for miles down the pass with cars waiting to turn left on to the Pikes Peak Highway. A real PITA for locals who can only get to their homes via 24.

I'm guessing the homeowners of Manitou are breathing a sigh of relief though - the lack of parking for the cog railway has been an issue for years. The business owners might not be as happy though with the potential loss of revenue.

Interesting times ahead.

I'm glad you made a separate post about this Mel. It's really too bad. Hopefully the county or state will organize some sort of public-private partnership if the Broadmoor cannot afford the repairs.

Yeah, well, it's owned by billionaire Philip Anschutz, so I doubt money is the problem.

Update:

Just read in the local rag that Pikes Peak may soon prohibit private vehicles and mandate shuttle rides to the summit of Pikes Peak. This could go into effect as soon as May 31, 2018. Thank God.

That is partly related to the construction at the top that has taken out about half the parking. Something has to be sort out this summer. The views are great on top but that is about it. The run up and down on the train was about 75% of the experience.

Yeah, I saw that bit too. It'll be interesting to see how it all pans out. The view is supposed to be much improved with the new Summit House, with an estimated completion date of 2020. We shall see. I just dread the potential traffic issues that might lay ahead. Last year was horrible and the cog was still running.

I think there could be some future problems with the Summit House. I was willing to take the train up but would not consider driving. The closure has to have some impact - I would think negative - on the business at the Summit House.

I took the train once, drove once, and tried to drive again last year, but the weather kept us from going up.

Manitou Springs is bound to feel the impact too.

At a party last night when someone mentioned that they had seen a flat bed truck hauling a couple of the train cars north on I-25. Looks like the equipment is being sold off.

As of a few minutes ago, the link isn't working again. So, for anyone interested:

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - The Cog Railway is back on track thanks to a new deal approved by the Manitou Springs City Council.

Tuesday night, the council voted in favor of an ordinance that gives the new owners tax breaks while they invest $100 million to rebuild the railway up to to the top of Pikes Peak.

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway closed late last year after 126 years of history in Manitou Springs. Its future was up in the air until Tuesday's deal was approved with the Oklahoma Publishing Company, the parent company of The Broadmoor.

“It is both challenging and exciting," said Manitou Springs Mayor Ken Jaray. "I’m feeling relieved, excited about the future, and ready to get some stuff done.”

The new owners hope to start demolition and construction as soon as late August. Right now, they are accepting bids for infrastructure and more. They hope to review those, sign contracts by the end of July, and then get to work.

Gary Pierson, president and CEO of Oklahoma Publishing Co., estimates the cost to rebuild the Cog Railway could be close to $100 million. The new and improved version of the railway would include demolishing and rebuilding parts of the track and the depot in Manitou. It would also include some new train cars.

"We spent the better part of the last 60 to 75 days working on a proposal that will work for both Manitou and for the Cog," Pierson said. "Whether this is a good deal or a bad deal you will have to decide for yourself. There was never bad faith on any side."

Locals who attended Tuesday night's public hearing expressed doubts about a 50-year cap. Part of the deal includes the city amending its amusement tax and capping andy taxpayer's annual amusement tax payment at $500,000. It's just one incentive for the ownership group to invest millions of dollars into the Cog. Mayor Ken Jaray believes most residents are in favor of the railway reopening.

"I believe the community is supportive of what we’re doing," said Jaray. "I think the vast majority of people have come to our public meetings have expressed support for this."

Part of the approved deal includes improved parking and transportation for the Cog. That could include a whole new parking structure at Hiawatha Gardens and improvements on Ruxton Avenue.

The new owners hope to start demolition and construction in late August or mid-September. If all goes according to plan, the railway could be reopened in 2020.

100 million is a big price tag. How do you get a return on that level of investment? Love to see the business plan.
