The OLD Coast Road?

I just read a little bit about the old road before Bixby Bridge was put in. Where does it begin and end? Safe? Maintained? Sounds awesome!

Read your rental car agreement about dirt roads.

It starts just north of Bixby Bridge and comes out by Andrew Molera State Park. It's about 10 miles long. I haven't driven it but it's on my list to do.

I haven't but my dad did years ago and I have a couple of friends who've driven it.

From what I've heard from them -- you would definitely want to drive it north to south (i.e. from the Bixby Bridge end). Some of the steep up hills driving south to north are tough.

tomfuller, awesome article

We're staying near Carmel for 4 nights, maybe we should rent a 4WD for a day! If you rent a 4WD I would assume you can go on dirt roads?

Not usually. The VAST majority of rental contracts preclude driving off pavement
