The monsoon is here
For those who watch such things, the Arizona monsoon arrives on average on July 7. And here she is! Right on time. Lots of thunder and lightning and blowing dust today. Temperature in the mountains north of Phoenix dropped from 95 to 75 between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. today.

It must be a spectacular sight. I was in Tucson last week when a small electrical storm came across the desert. Fabulous.

Here too in SW Colorado and the kids in ABQ report it is there too!
Thank goodness.. Debi |
when is the approximate date of end of monsoon?
thanks wintkat |
July 8.

The Arizona monsoon usually ends around Labor Day, give or take a couple weeks. The lows stop coming up from Old Mexico, shift eastward, and so we get more dry weather. Just now, the monsoon is in full force all across the state.

Does your Arizona monsoon reach into Southern Utah? I have this unnatural fear of flash floods. Hearing about all of these thunderstorms makes me a bit nervous about our Narrows hike in Zion next week.
|
Monsoon hits all of the Four Corner states [CO, UT,AZ and NM]. They can cause serious flash flooding in canyons, so ask for information on what to do should one hit before hiking at each location.

I've heard that the rangers will advise you to stay out of the canyons if there are storms predicted.
I usually love thunder & lightning storms, but somehow I don't think they will be so charming while we're sitting in a large tin can in the middle of Lake Powell. :o |
