The Jane NYC (Hotel)

Hi there:

This hotel seems to have a unique vibe and interesting set-up, and the price isn't bad at $99/night. I'm in my late 20's, and will traveling solo in April, and I'm curious if anyone has stayed here.

The reviews on Travel Advisor seem to be split down the middle; two raved and two hated it, but it sounds like a lot had to do with the construction going on, and the two good reviews were most recent.

If you have an opinion or experience, please share. Thx!

How much is the rate for the dates in April you'll be there?

The room is tiny (50 sq ft) and shared bathroom!

Unless they're charging very little, I will look elsewhere.

Actually, never mind. One review on TA mentioned bedbugs. There is no way in H*ll I'll stay at a hotel withh bedbugs willingly.

If you stay there, let us know how it is. I love the landing page of the website.

An interesting concept and a great website.

For the same rate you could have your own bathroom at the LaQuinta on 32nd (AAA rate). www.lq.com

Another option I found today is the Chelsea Savoy. www.ChelseaSavoy.com

I looked around on Fodors for information, and while it was mentioned as an option in a few threads, it wasn't ever reviewed, per se, by anyone who has stayed there. The TA reviews look pretty good for the most part.

If anyone has stayed there, please, share your thoughts/experience. It looks pretty generic, but a good location and a slightly bigger room for roughly the same price.

My clients have stayed there & love it as it is nice & close to our office.

I like this hotel as it is right
next to a subway stop & more centrally located than the Jane.
Plus more traffic there late at nite for a single gal.

Of the hotels you mention, the Chelsea Savoy is on a busy streetcorner in a popular neighborhood for nightlife. The subway (1 train) is on the corner. It's a good location and a reasonably cheap hotel by New York standards.

I wouldn't stay at The Jane just because I'm not sharing a bathroom with strangers.

I like the location of the Chelsea Savoy but I have not stayed there.

Awesome! Thanks so much for the feedback. I appreciate it, and will likely choose the Chelsea Savoy. I'm waiting to hear back from them on my dates.

The Jane has been an sro (single room occupancy) meaning in essence a welfare hotel. There are still some of these guests in residence and there's been a long standing battle b/w hotel and mgmt.

The Ace is a new hotel opening on March 1 with private bathrooms in the rooms. They have a bunk room for $99/night.

There have been dozens of specials on travelzoo.com and elsewhere that make a regular room in a fancy hotel close to this price. I'd book something cancelable and wait for specials. Your other option is to try Priceline. You can probably get a 4* hotel for $100-120/night plus tax or a 3* for less. I'd go that route before I'd stay at the Jane.

Thanks Mclaurie!

I just checked out the Ace's website and it's pretty cool. Similar to the Jane without the riff raff, so to speak. That's definitely on the "list" right now and I appreciate your other suggestions as well.

If you're not familiar with Priceline, go to betterbidding.com or biddingfortravel.com for explanation and help.

I really think you can find a decent place with your own bathroom for ~ $100-120 in April. The St. Mark's hotel is very basic with small rooms but will fit the budget. If you're looking to meet people though, staying some place with shared bathroom like the Pod hotel might be better. The Vanderbilt YMCA is another idea.

FWIW, there was an article in this month's Travel and Leisure magazine on budget hotels in NYC, and both the Jane and Ace were featured. No new information to report-- in fact, they weren't anything more than a regurgitation of the hotels' websites, but I just found it ironic.

I made my reservation at the Ace yesterday, and I'm really excited! I like the edgy vibe and hipster decor, and the guy I've been corresponding with there has been very prompt and attentive in answering my questions.

I will post an update after I stay there in April. I'm hoping for a fabulous last birthday of my 20's. Thanks everyone!
