The guys who cruse Ocean Blvd. in Myrtle Beach-Where do they come from?

Just back from Myrtle Beach...I've seen a bit of cruising before but never like the scene on Ocean Blvd. in Mytle Beach...bumper to bumper until about 1 am....mostly young white guys, lots of pick up trucks. Who are these guys? Are they tourists or locals?

WannabeinaMontserrat Jul 7th, 2008 06:24 AM

Both. One of the reasons we avoid MB, particularly 'in season'. The bike weeks are lots of fun as well, only its old white guys on motorcycles. Unless it is black bike week, in which case it is old black guys on motorcycles.

missypie, why do you want to know? Want to follow one home?

LOL

Ha! That was me when I was 17 in my '65 Mustang about 20 years ago. Great times. I will say that the cruising scene was a little more tame back then.

I was in Myrtle Beach on my way to Georgetown over Memorial Day weekend during one of the bike festivals and the traffic was horrendous. Definitely bumper to bumper, and I have absolutely zero patience for that. There were people hanging outside their hotels on the main street through town, I guess trying to "see and be seen" but I don't get it. Why go to Myrtle Beach only to sit in traffic and hang around outside your hotel on a lawn chair? Weird.

I want to know because I couldn't figure out the answer myself. The hotel rates for the week of 4th of July were quite steep...It would seem out of the price range of most 20 year old guys that I know...or do 8 of them get together and rent a small condo? Or are they semi-locals, maybe from within a 50 mile radius who come to MB for that purpose? I admit that I don't understand cruising....I sit in bumper to bumper traffic every night on the way home from work-don't want to do that on vacation.

They're the ones who couldn't get a hotel reservation in

Key West or Virginia Beach

Locals? That's actually pretty funny. The only people who visit MB at peak season and jam onto a 2-3 lane with a stoplight every 20 feet and a 25 MPH speed limit are out of towners.

And you can't generalize about how much money these young white guys have--some are staying at the Marriott (thanks Mom & Dad for being well off!), and some are staying at less than desirable hotels/condos that will never appear on expedia or vrbo.

Tracy, you have my sympathy for being in MB during the Memorial Day freakfest (a/k/a BikeFest). It turns the town into one, big ugly street party and ruins what should be a very meaningful weekend. All of us who live here hate it, wish we could stop it, and are thankful that it's only one weekend out of the year.

Rant completed. I feel better. :-)

I thought MB was in the process of eliminating the Bike fests, a la Lauderdale & Daytona & spring break ?

travelhappyfamily Jul 9th, 2008 09:57 AM

Wannabe - I was going to post the same question! I'd heard that as well. Anyone know for sure?

We've been to MB during a couple of Bike Week and Urban Bike Week (with kids...quite an education!). The congestion is insane, but it's honestly not bothered me. I guess if you know that it's happening and you still choose to go to MB, you have to accept it.

In Pinnacle a person is considered well traveled if they have visited MB more than once. Apparently what they do when there is drive up and down Ocean Blvd.

Oh for the good old days of dancing at the Pad to the sounds of the Tams...........

As far as ending the bike weeks, there is a lot more activity this year than in years past. But, we're dealing with about five separate municipalities and a county government. And there is a vocal biker minority here who are ranting about individual freedom and the horrors of the discrimination being perpetrated on them. God forbid anyone trample on their rights to blare their straight pipes at all hours and in all places.

In short, I'm hopeful, but I'll believe it when I can no longer see and hear it.

WannabeinaMontserrat Jul 13th, 2008 04:32 PM

Hopefully you'll have some luck fall on your side. Though there is little comparison, we typically vacate CLT when the NASCAR hordes arrive. Best of luckgetting rid of the bikers. Even if I rode a street bike, based on the fatality stats in MB, I'd steer clear.

BTW - I'm pretty sure your 'rights' end when you begin infringing on other peoples' rights.
