Has anyone ever stayed here?

Reviews on Trip Advisor for the most part are good. I just called for the rate for one night on 8/31 and I was told $25 + tax.

The cheapest anywhere else I've looked has been $90 for one night.

The only thing I'd say is that if you are just staying in Las Vegas for one night (perhaps before heading back to the airport), there are better places to stay than downtown. But if saving money is your sole objective, then you get what you pay for. It's a really cheap hotel and has basic rooms, and that's sometimes what people want. For myself, I'd probably look for an off-strip motel with a pool, if only to avoid the heat but if you don't have a car, then this might be a decent compromise. Try eating at the Main Street Station buffet; it's really good.

This is our last night in town before we hit the airport in the morning. We do want a low price stay but not seedy/dirty. We plan on going to a couple of the brewpubs in the area that evening, don't really care for the Vegas experience (been there before). Do you recommend any hotels off-strip for under $100. A couple I looked at got bad reviews and some talked about them as being scary/dangerous.

I have read good, decent and horrible reviews on the Gold Spike. I'm all about saving money but I don;t want to be miserable my last night.

The problem you're seeing with rates is that this is a Friday night, and LV hotel rates typically triple for the weekend. I notice that even the Motel 6 on East Tropicana is about $90 per night for that night. I don't have much personal experience staying in motels in LV, but I can definitely tell you that the cheapest casino-hotel rates will be downtown, so your choice of the Gold Spike is probably about as cheap as your going to find.

I notice that on Expedia the Tuscany is $69 for that night, and the Alexis Park is $89. Tuscany gets pretty good marks from travelers, but you could ask for opinions here. Both are considerably closer to the airport than downtown.

Please don't stay at the Gold Spike. It's the seediest of the seedy. Also avoid the Western, the El Cortez, and the Plaza downtown. Avoid any Travelodge on the Strip.

If you can get the Tuscany for $69, take it.

Phew...glad someone who knows vegas chimed in!! I'd be scared to death to book a place that only charged $25/night--not just what I'd get for a room, but the rest of the folks in that place. YIKES!

Checked Tuscany website, $149 for the night we'd be there.

VegasLocal.....I have read tons of mixed reviews on Gold Spike. Trip Advisor has a lot of people saying it's not that bad, just old. Others say it's disgusting.

My wife and I usually stay in Econo Lodges, Comfort Inns, Holidays Inns, etc. We have stayed in some crappy places.

Other places under $100:
El Cortez
La Quinta: Tropicana
Golden Gate

Vegas already said to stay away from the Cortez.

How is Palace Station ($94)?

Four Queens
Wild Wild West

Maybe the deals & destinations for last minute travel on Expedia will get you something cheaper.

The only problem with Palace Station is that it is off strip. But I'm pretty sure they have a shuttle.

I stayed there probably 9 years ago. There's nothing wrong with it and beats Golden Gate (downtown) by a bunch.

Just to be clear, the $69 rate I discovered at the Tuscany was on Expedia, not booking direct with the hotel. It's really important that you shop around. In LV, you don't necessary find the best rates by booking direct.

I find that booking through Expedia has saved me much more than going direct in Vegas, unless you are signed up for the hotel e-mail specials...

Reading info on Tuscany and some are saying that it is in a shady area also and not safe to walk at night.

The Tuscany in a shady area? That is laughable, especially since you were considering the Gold Spike to begin with.

The Tuscany is on Flamingo Road about 1 mile east of the strip. Since it is not on the strip nor near other tourist attractions, there is nowhere that a tourist would want to walk to, especially since you could easily grab a taxi to the strip right in front of the hotel.

The Tuscany is not in a shady area. It's in a well-established area that has its share of questionable people about, but shady? The Gold Spike/El Cortez area is known for its abundance of drug dealers and "professionals".

You'll be fine at the Tuscany.

Thanks for all the input. I booked the Tuscany last night through Expedia, even got a 2-1 coupon to be used at their Mexican restaurant.

The reviews that talked about it being shady said that they walked to the trip, that it was only about a two block walk.

I'm glad you found a place that meets your price requirements. Just remember that a "block" in LV can be half a mile (or perhaps more).

We are back. We did stay at Tuscany and loved it. The grounds are a little confusing but it is two blocks off the strip and right in the middle to get on and off of I-15. Also, Elllis Island Brewing ($1 beers 24/7) was one block over. Thanks for pointing me towards Expedia and Tuscany.

Oh, yes.....didn't find the walk to the strip to be seedy. It looked like normal Vegas to me....people from all walks.
