The Goat-Broadway Play

Has anyone seen the Goat starring Sally Field? How was it?

Mary Anne Cook Sep 21st, 2002 10:24 AM

I am interested in the same play.

I saw The Goat in August with Bill Pullman and Mercedes Ruehl. I truly enjoyed. Know however, that it is rather controversial. It centers around a family and, without giving away too much, has a beastiality component to the story line. That being said, it is a funny, conversation starting show. I would see it again... Sally Fields is made for the part!!!

Let's see now, Jodie, you say it's about beastiality, and the title is The Goat. Duh, I wonder, could it be....? But, no, Jodie, we can't give away the plot! Duh.......

Does Sally Field overact in this play? I watched Steel Magnolias last week and almost died laughing at how hyper she was in the cemetary scene!

Huh, wasn't she supposed to be hysterical in that scene? Or do you call all hysterical scenes "overacting"?

Two friends who have lost young-adult children were amazed that she captured their feelings in that scene at the cemetery in "Steel Magnolias."

I have seen her and she is truly amazing in the role - go now!

I have to vote with OVERACTING! It's something she does often, actually, although I think she's overall a very good actress.

Can't recommend it. It was boring.

If Metamorphosis is still playing, I would recommend seeing that. It was great!

And I thought Metamorphosis was a cute idea with no substance. Go figure.

I just saw The Goat this weekend. I won't give anything away, but I found it very disappointing. It was a potentially interesting topic, but Albee chose to make the same joke over and over again. Since someone already mentioned a bestiality component, I'll just say that it wasn't explored as I would have hoped. The acting ran hot and cold. A couple of weeks ago I was blown away by a production of The Maids in DC. The ticket cost $17.50 and you could usually get a discounted ticket. It's disturbing when a theatre with far more resources turns out so much less.

Vita: How exactly did you want the beastiality theme further explored?

Howard Sep 30th, 2002 09:56 AM

This morning's NY Times gave the new cast a favorable review, especially Bill Irwin, Sally Field's costar.

OK, for those of you who haven't seen The Goat yet, you might not want to read further.

It's hard for me to isolate the exact problem, but there was no feeling there. I was expecting a drama and I got what looked more like a comedy, but with the same joke repeated over and over again. I thought it was supposed to be about a man who has everything and yet choses to have a relationship with a goat - not just sex - but a relationship. Why?

Instead, jokes were flying and his wife just ranted most of the time. When your life is crumbling around you, I think there are surreal moments when you don't know what to do. I would have liked to see more conflicting emotions, more ebbing and flowing of feeling. There were moments but not enough of them.

I won't say what the ending is, but I should I felt something at the end and it left me cold.

The play also didn't seem to be just about bestiality but how we perceive relationships and where we draw the line at what we consider deviant behavior (e.g., extramarital relationships, homosexuality, incest). I don't mean to associate homosexuality in with incest but clearly there are people who would consider it deviant behavior. My point here is that there seems to be a continuum between appropriate and deviant behavior and we all make our own judgements about where these behaviors fall. This was touched upon but I would have like to see that explored a bit more.
