Hey MikeMo.
What's with the potshots directed at me because some of us are smart enough to see that Bush is a BAD Republican.

As for the personal attacks (several of which I've let slide without comment) I grew up in an Italian neighborhood of New York, do you really want me throwing politeness out the window?

travelinwifey Dec 1st, 2004 09:40 AM

Heck, that's how the presidency was won, with personal attacks, not by looking at the issues. The funny thing is that they won, but they just can't leave it alone until everyone thinks like them. Which sounds alot like the place we went to free from opression, right?

I'm sorry to have responded but the below the belt personal attacks really bother me.

Have a good day fodorites:)

ahhnold Dec 1st, 2004 09:46 AM

Travelinwife, Fact is, the personal attacks on Kerry were the truth, the personal attacks on Bush( Dan Rather)were not.

However, you were right that when people have no clue, they resort to personal attacks. Whic would explain all the personal attacks on me. My feelings bruise like a peach.

GoTravel Dec 1st, 2004 09:49 AM

Hey y'all, let's not fight.

Can we just step back and celebrate the fact that we live in a country in that we have a right to fight and bitch about our government?

Okay now, group hug!!

(((((())))))))

:-D

I thought this thread was about the dollar? - I'm sure it will be deleted soon.

Anyway, I thought both Ryan and Bob_brown made some pretty good points why US currency is so low and what we have to worry about.

But Bob - said the Dollar droped 50% since introduction of the euro- thats not correct the Euro was introduced(as printable currency) at 1.12180 USD buys 1 Euro

the euro was introduced eailer but only as a tool for banks and investments. so It is not really accurate to use the first numbers - since alot of money was still invested into other currencies
But the other points you made about the problems we face are very real. I work in Structured Finance and analysts here are very worried about the state of the dollar - It is very likey we may face a stock market "crash" very soon.

The problem with the dollar is way beyond high low rates now - the real cause of the devauluation is the deficit. And the reality is no one will buy more from the US beacuse of China. The Chinese Yuan is tied to the dollar - the lower the dollar goes - the lower the yuan goes. Why invest in an economy that is struggling with labor costs, strikes, and bad debt(USA), when you can invest in an aggressivly growing economy where labor is normall 1/4 the price (now 1/8th beacuse of the dollar) - China

Until China floats its currency we in the US are up the creek

Re the quote: "The personal attacks on Kerry were the truth." HUH??????

Agree with you Bob- the nat'l debt is like a no-limit master card out of control. We're back to Voodoo economics in DC.

ahhnold Dec 1st, 2004 01:03 PM

Those would be the swift boat Veterans. Yes, those adds were the truth. His superiors did not like him one bit.

tuckerdc Dec 1st, 2004 01:24 PM

and what part of your anatomy have you taken shrapnel or bullets in, ahhnold? move on.

ahhnold Dec 1st, 2004 01:35 PM

Tuckerdc, Personal attacks again. Prove me wrong, loser. Bring something to the table to debate of opinion or "move on". Fine to not agree with me, I like it that way. But, life is simpler when you have a point of opinion. In your case, fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go thru it.

As long as I've lived I have heard the same "woe" song about this.

I have studied Economics at Grad level, although I don't pretend to have a fraction of the high finance knowledge that may be around this board, but I do know that I have a lot of personal eye witness history (I was at the '68 convention of Dems in Chicago) and through lots of other interesting times.

And guess what, I have heard that sky is falling thing so many times before, especially in relation to dollar value vs European currencies and also the deficit/ Voodoo economics chant. And didn't we just have a Reagan adoration society going. Why? Because it was not such a "terrible" thing as it seemed. It DID trickle down. That's why most of you have time to post and travel so much, guys.

The real evil is double digit inflation, if you have ever lived through that you know what I mean. There is actually much less poverty right now than when I was a little girl arriving in the USA. Don't argue about politics with personal slurs etc. People have to change there minds by themselves, as they see how it really works. You won't convince them.

soccr Dec 1st, 2004 02:16 PM

I desperately want both ahhnold and this thread to go away, even though Bob hasn't answered my question yet.

Ahhnold, the personal attacks on the Repuglies were true, the personal attacks on Kerry et al weren't. So there! Eye of the beholder, etc.

Also, you can have a lot of education in economics and still not "see" things either as others see them (economics departments in this country are based entirely in market theory) or as they are (who did and didn't benefit from "trickle down" and who does and doesn't benefit from "trickle up.").

I tip my hat to those who have successfully comprehended various statistics and curves, but no two eras are the same just from the point of view of circumstance, and no one has a crystal ball.

Otherwise, please ahhnold, take it outside with the hogs. Go away. Shoo shoo. Have you no other goal in life than to pick fights? What an a.h.!

snowrooster Dec 1st, 2004 02:37 PM

soccr - Agreed. Pretty pathetic when someone constantly posts on a travel board trying to stir up trouble regarding politics. I guess he can't stand the heat on the politcal boards so he comes here instead. It's kind of pathetic. You have to wonder what kind of person would take such amusement in being nothing but a troll!

Little_Man Dec 1st, 2004 03:34 PM

thank goodness for all the great responses on this thread...except for Ahhnold, it's been really interesting!

cigalechanta Dec 1st, 2004 03:39 PM

I posted the url (on the Europe board) for the article on this subject in this week's New Yorker Magazine.

SFImporter Dec 1st, 2004 03:55 PM

The Euro/US Dollar exchange rate is the worst it has ever been.

I import ceramics from Italy for resale here in America and every time I order more stock the wosening rates mean I can't afford to buy as much - and I certainly don't want to charge customers more.

Beatle Dec 1st, 2004 05:53 PM

JJ5: Agree with remark re double digit inflation, but have doubts that trickle down led the way to improvement. Bush Sr. had the good sense to rescind his "no new taxes" pledge. Did he have a choice due to Reaganomics and the growing deficit?

But on the current scene, the jackpot question I have is this: Does it make "economic" sense to hand out tax cuts while we are trying to finance the Iraq debacle? I am not being facetious, if someone can offer a justification I'll listen. And I agree-keep it civil!

ahhnold Dec 2nd, 2004 04:50 AM

Snowrooster, I come here for the simple reason of being your friend.

soccr, Rathers attack on Bush was true? A little imbecilic of you to assume that. I suppose you feel Kitty Kelly's book was non-fiction as well.

Jayne1973 Dec 2nd, 2004 04:53 AM

Mikemo, since you are now in Mexico, how's the dollar holding up to the peso?
