The Driftless Area: An underappreciated region of the Upper Midwest

Hey all! Alongside occasional visits to Red Wing and other cities in Minnesota that are part of the Driftless Area, I was able to travel to Iowa, to Effigy Mounds National Park with my grandparents. While I haven't written about our experience at the park yet, I did post up this informative guide to the Driftless Area. I hope you enjoy and maybe plan a trip to the Driftless Area in the future!

I agree that it is a beautiful area to explore. The drive along the Mississippi River is wonderful.

Yes, I hope to make it to to Dubuque, Iowa sometime. It looks like a beautiful area, with Mines of Spain.

Interesting. Had not heard about the Driftless Area though living Illinois, Missouri, etc. Are the Mississippi Palisades included? Have a college fraternity buddy in a house high on a bluff opposite Fulton, IL. Also familiar with Galena, IL, where U. S. Grant once lived.

Wisconsin is a great state to explore and the drift less area is one of those natural wonders. You might want to check out this site:

Ozarksbill: It looks like the Mississippi Palisades are included, and thanks for letting me know about that! I will add it to the list of destinations.

Thanks for the link ronko!

We own a cabin in the SW Wisconsin driftless area. Beautiful country, friendly people. My husband bought the place so he could go fly-fishing and star-gazing (it's very dark there, being rural and a lot of Amish nearby..) I don't make it up there as often as I'd like. We are near Viroqua which is a great little town.

Around Red Wing is really beautiful, too, have camped at Frontenac SP a couple of times. Beautiful state park with great trails along the Mississippi bluffs.
