The Clift

My fiance are spending three nights in San Francisco in August. We realize the weather may not be great, but I am now concerned about the Clift, where we've booked a room. Many suggest that it is not the best. Any thoughts or insight would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I shy away from the Schrager hotels.Too much. What may have been a grand hotel before may not be under new ownership/management.But they ARE popular. My personal preference is the Donatello a block from UnionSquare.I prefer room size --400 sf-- to "extras".Everybody's different! Its got a good Italian restaurant and solid family run hotel.

The Clift is a very "hip" hotel. It's often featured in interior design magazines. It tends to attract a youngish, fashionable crowd. If you want something more traditionally luxurious the Ritz Carlton or Four Seasons would be good choices.

If you haven't already done so, you may want to read the 7 user reviews on the Clift Hotel at www.tripadvisor.com.

We really like the White Swan Inn, a B and B on Bush a block or so off of Powell. Gas fireplaces in every room, good breakfast buffet and evening wine/sherry and hor'd's, and very walkable to Union Square, Chinatown, North Beach, the wharf.
