The cheapest accommodations right on the rim is the Bright Angel Lodge. After that would be the Kachina and Thunderbird and the most expensive is El Tovar. Hotels not on the rim are probably less expensive. For lodging info see: http://www.kaibab.org/gc/serv/gc_serv.htm#south_park

You don't have to stay close to the rim, there are free shuttle buses running often, connecting all hotels, the rim, shopping, restaurants, etc... National parks website is very good at explaining that.

I found nothing cheap about the rates at the hotels in Grand Canyon. The only thing that was cheap (except for El Tovar) was the way they looked...very stark with minimal furnishings. However, it was nice to stay inside the park which we would do again. It would be nice if they would allow some nice inexpensive chains to take over and so some remodeling. We stayed at Thunderbird Lodge.
