The Century-Discount Designer Shopping

Does anyone know if The Century (one of
my favorite discount fashion houses) has
reopened? I heard it was closed or
destroyed due to the events on 9/11.

You mean Century 21. It's closed but expected to re-open within a month. They have a website, I have heard.

Why don't you go to Daffy's or Loemann's instead?

Elizabethagain Oct 20th, 2001 12:45 PM

Daffy's is nice, Loehmann's is nice, a store called Nice Price is nice, but C21 was/in a class of its own, with lots of last year's (I'm told) $5000 dresses for $200, stuff like that, as well as things that start and end in more moderate price ranges.

Last Easter I realized I needed something new to wear to church on Sunday (because my regular "Easter outfit," which is robin's egg blue in homage to Easters past, had gotten smaller). I went to C21 and found a lovely pale yellow cashmere skirt marked $89, original price $500.

When I went to the checkout, the casher asked me to wait while she talked to her supervisor--it turned out her register scanned the label correctly, and the skirt had been further marked down to $19 (not a typo).

So--that's kind of an answer about why not Daffy's--this wouldn't happen at Daffy's I think!!!

Century 21 was a gold mine. I thought it might have been destroyed, but I'm glad to hear that it will be re-opening.

Century 21 was located in downtown Manhattan just across the street from the World Trade Center.

C21 has 2 other stores, in Bensonhurst Brooklyn and Westbury L.I. According to an article in last Sunday's NYTimes, they're also planning to open one soon in Morristown NJ, and they hope to reopen the Manhattan store within a couple of months. They've also been running ads in the Times and the Daily News that they're overstocked with the higher end designer merchandise that was sitting in a warehouse and if you but that merchandise (the ad wasn't clear if only the designer merch, not 'regular stuff') you get a gift certificate equal to half your purchase (e.g. buy $100 at their discounted prices, get $50 certificate)
I miss the downtown store!!!

Interesting article in last week's New York Times about this store. Check it out.

Does anyone know if the oulet for Century 21 in Secaucus is as good as the NY store? I never knew whattype of store it was and have always been tempted to stop in.

xx Jun 13th, 2002 10:06 AM

I though the Secaucus location is their warehouse and was only used temporarily while the Manhattan store was closed--could be wrong, of course. I know they just opened a store on the green in Morristown NJ that should be a "regular " Century 21 store

hobojo Jun 13th, 2002 06:48 PM

I just went to the Secaucus warehouse this past Sat. (It is only opened on weekends) and I was VERY disappointed.
It is nothing like the stores. I am familiar with the Brooklyn store. It just seemed like they had a lot of junk that they couldn't sell in their regular stores, the prices weren't that great either. I would stick with the stores. Has anyone been to Morristown yet?

I think Secaucus and all of those stores are not anything close to what they are cracked up to be.Better bargains in NYC!
