Thanks for sharing the trip reports- missing Kauai. I've been to Kauai and the Big Island. And I agree with you- Kauai definitely wins.
I did like the Big Island, it's just nearly as magical as Kauai. The Big Island is nice in terms of variety- you can stay on the sunny Kohala Coast, you can ride horses in the mountains of Waimea, you can go to an active volcano, you can see black sand volcanic beaches, or zip line through a rain forest. But you have to drive 1-2 hours to get anywhere. There's a reason it's called the BIG Island.
And I second Cafe Pesto on the Big Island.
If I had the choice, I definitely would go back to Kauia. The North Shore is my happy place.
