the BEST time to visit NYC.
Im planning a trip to NYC in the next couple of months. When is a good time to visit and why.
Thanks! |
May, early June, and October - because these months have the best weather and the tourist crowds are relatively small.
|
There have been a couple of threads on this lately if your search above.
|
suzanne, NYC is packed March through New Years with the exception of a short time in August. There are so many conferences and coventions in NYC that if the tourists aren't there, conventioneers are. |
Mid to late May or early Sept. Kids are in school and no one with kids ever plan vacations this time of year. No matter when you go, there are crowds. Remember, 10,000,000+ people live here and that's without tourists. Enjoy your trip.

ANYTIME is the best time to visit New York! (It is, after all, the Capital of the Universe) But if you had twelve months to choose from, I'd probably pick May-June and Sept-Oct because of the weather. |
We rented an apartment in NYC for the full month of May in 2001, thinking it would be the perfect time for us, coming from Florida. We arrived May 1 to a record heat wave. It was something like 98 in Manhattan and it felt hotter than South Florida in August! We thought, "uh-oh, what have we done?" But within two days the weather was perfect. The entire month except for those first two days was just wonderful. I still think that's the best time. June can easily get too hot, late Sepember and October can get very rainy and gloomy.

It was years ago but I was in New York in October and it was wonderful. We dressed in those days so just was wearing a knit suit, didn't need a jacket or coat and it was perfect.
|
Whenever you can get there!
One year I arrived on the hottest day of the year. I walked from the UWS to Midtown in triple digit temps. Another year I had two walking tours book for what turned out to be the coldest weekend of the year. Only 8 of us showed up for the Walking and Tasting Tour of Greenwich Village, The next morning I was the ONLY one to show up for a private tour of Ground Zero. Spring and fall are great! |
We will be arriving in NYC on the 23 Dec.......xmas in New York, is something we have always wanted to do. Are we mad! We are coming from Brisbane Australia, where xmas is hot humid and muggy.

aussiedreamer, if you've always wanted to do Christmas in New York, then you'll have a great time. It's true that Christmas through New Year's the city is packed, but the Christmas crowds are part of the fun of the holiday season. The city is beautiful then. The main advice I'd give is that if you're planning to see Broadway shows during that time, book ahead.
For bigbuck, I'll second those responses that say visit in April/May/early June, or else late September/October if you enjoy fall weather. In the summer the heat and humidity can make touring around exhausting; the only benefit can be that the city is a bit less crowded on summer weekends (because anyone who can get out, does!) |
thanks Robhart, and I have heard through another thread, that the xmas sales will be fun too....
