The Best of Kauai 2012

The Garden Island News posted their "Best of Kauai" survey results.

I'll have to check out some of these places ... in three more days!!!!

http://th-ee.thegardenisland.com/spe...e33093a2d.html

PS. Can't believe Kountry Kitchen isn't on the list this year!

I've never been a Kountry Kitchen fan. I think it is a fine breakfast joint, but nothing special and there are better banana mac pancakes to be found.

But then again, this isn't a survey, it's a marketing piece to bring in advertisement revenue from the winners. So maybe if Kountry Kitchen wanted to participate in the 'survey' they could have.

We loved a Chinese restaurant in Waimea - that our Japanese/Hawaiian friends frequented - Green Garden? - but it may have closed?

They also took us to a special Japanese Teahouse - Hanamaulu - where after you entered - you could have thought you were transported to Japan. Haven't been there in years but used to be very authentic/good. Just south of Lihue is it? http://www.yelp.com/biz/hanamaulu-cafe-hanamaulu

And the best Mahi Mahi I have ever been served was at the restaurant by the Wailua River/Fern Grotto embarkation - where the elder lass of the Fuji family - Hatsui - disappeared into the Kitchen to talk to her friends.

A little later - out comes this incredibly delicious/tender/thick piece of Mahi Mahi - wrapped/cooked in Ti leaves. That was back in 1977 - and I still haven't had a better hunk of Mahi Mahi since then - even including one I caught here off of San Diego.

BTW - also like Kountry Kitchen.

"Best Restaurant (North) Tahiti Nui" Really? Love it for what it is, but obviously the "best of" selections weren't based on quality of food.

Tomsd, unfortunately Green Garden has been closed for some time now, it was in Hanapepe on the highway.

Thank you jamie. And Tahiti Nui is usually not remembered for their chow but for their good times. In the little shopping center next door are a couple of decent/fun places to dine- a nd heading bsck toward Princeville a little bit - the Hanalei Dolphin (right on the river) is very good for seafood and steaks, etc.

What? No Pono Market? Best poke and fried chicken on the island...and you can get a marriage certificate there!

It didn't make the list but I highly recommend Pizzetta in old town Koloa near Poipu. Their Kalua pig and cabbage is about as good as it gets. It's in the old plantation building so it has some ambiance and if you get a window seat in the front, the people watching while you eat is wonderful.

We had the worst meal we ever had on Kauai at Pizzetta (admittedly 5 years ago, though it obviously has stuck with me ! )

Not only can you get a marriage certificate, and a great plate lunch, but Pono serves up some of the most authentic aloha on the island!

SD....I like the pancakes at Ono Family Restaurant, Olympic Cafe, and Tip Top in that order over Kountry Kitchen.

We had the best pie on Kauai at the Right Slice. There is a store in Lihue, but she (the owner, it is a small company) is present and selling pies at Art Walk in Hanapepe on Friday night and at the market in outside Hanalei on Tuesday amongst other places. Her fresh fruit pies are amazing and the chicken pot pie is delicious. Songdoc, one of her savory pies and a tossed green salad with makings from the market makes a healthy and inexpensive meal!

Right Slice is on our "to do list".
