The best Mexican Restaurant in Houston

I recommend Pappasito's and Chuy's. (If you go to Chuy's, be sure to order the "off the menu" jalapeno dip to eat with your tortilla chips. YUM.)

Here we go - everybody has a different take on this!<BR>Bellairegirl is right on - Pappasito's is great for Tex-Mex. Chuy's does serve good Santa Fe/Southwest type dishes. If what you want is Mexican, though, as opposed to hybrid or Americanized dishes, drive along Beechnut or Bellaire between loop 610 and beltway 8. You'll also find lots of other Latin food (Salvadoran, Nicaraguan, etc.) in the area, too.

I prefer Pico's and Otillia's. And I really like Tila's, especially their margarita's. Friends speak highly of El Tiempo and El Tonyo's. If you have young children, try Lupe Tortilla. Personally, Pappasito's is decent quality, but oversized and overpriced. Although excellent, I tend to think of Chuy's as not being truly Houston since it is based in Austin. Enjoy!

I like Casa Adobe. There are 2 locations. One is on Shepherd and the other is in Sugarland. The chips and burittos are great. Most mexican places leave me feeling heavy, Casa Adobe does not. Also, they use vegetable oil not lard which is better.<BR>

LDLee: I do agree with you on Los Tonyos (not El) on Kirby. It's not your typical Tex-Mex, which is a good thing. It's a new Mexican restaurant owned by Tony Vallone, the owner of one of the toniest (no pun intended) Houston restaurants, Tony's.<BR><BR>They make killer guacamole table-side to your specifications and have awesome desserts.

Pappasitos is okay if chain-style restaurants are your bag. Personally, I don't care for them.<BR><BR>I prefer the down-home funkiness of Irma's for authentic Tex-mex flavor in a casual, fun atmosphere.<BR><BR>If I'm feeling upscale, I head over to Las Alamedas on I-10.<BR><BR>If I'm feeling downscale but in the mood for something more Mex than Tex, I head out to one of the taquerias (personally, I favor Taqueria La Tapatia, but your mileage may vary...)<BR><BR>Proveche!<BR>Mark

Two Pesos

IT's funny, the whole time I lived there, I only found one place I liked and that was Lupe's Tortillas. The rest were either plain chain, or if &quot;authentic&quot; was incredibly oily and cheap ingrediants. Fatty meats, cheap cheese...yuck! My husband and I were SO happy to move back to the food in Austin.

Oh yes, and I'm surprised by the Las Alamedas recommendation. We finally went there, and talk about faded glory! Totally reeked of smoke, and the food was just terrible! My shrimp was rubbery and smelly (which there is NO excuse for this close to the coast), and tortillas were store bought and my husbands chicken was dry and flavorless. Very disappointing.

I have lived in The Woodlands for 10 years and I love it!! There is no area any more beautiful!! Very safe! Very neighborly, great neighbors!! Great shopping, restaurants, great place to raise children!! The Houston area has tons of things to do, a great city for enjoying culture and the arts. We could not be any more pleased. We have a lovely home and would pay tons more in any other city. Everyone I know loves living in the Woodlands. Many people we know have been transferred out of town but want to move back and some do move back!! Good schools - can't say enough good about it!!

Pico's on Belaire Blvd - hands down IMO. More Mexican interior than Tex-Mex and very, very good.

Hi dfr! Nice of you to reply , but, pssst! its a thread that's over 4 years old till that kimkim resurected it to gush about The Woodlands in reply to a Q about a mexican restaurant! A bit odd..

Missed this thread in 2003. But I must add my fave, since I lived in Houston 30 yrs and still go back to this great little place every time I go back.

No website (are you kidding, the charm starts here). Little converted house off of I45 west of Downtown on Fuqua. Very unpretentious, very authemtic, very close to being in Mexico in flavor, very inexpensive. When you go in you will hear &quot;bam, bam, bam.&quot; It is the fellas in the kitchen hammering on the meat to make it tender.
