Thanks, everyone!!!

Mom. I know you know that feeling! Such mixed feelings, the whole weekend!

Kodi, thanks! I'm not sure if I'd say I handled it great but it worked out great and that is what matters!

Toucan, Target is a lifesaver!

I'm glad you all are reading this in the spirit that I meant it in! It could read like DD is a spoiled airhead, and she really isn't. But I have missed her this summer, as she was living the last days of her childhood as an adult. I have honestly talked to her more in the last two days, really deep, good conversations like we used to have. Not sure why she had to go away for that to happen but I'm pretty sure it's normal. Just got off the phone with her and she is doing so well! This rush stuff is pretty hectic but she's dealing with it and also okay with Rushing again in the Spring if she doesn't get the houses she wants.

you wait til you get them back!

we have both of ours living back at home with us now [don't ask, long story] and though I love them dearly, and they both do just enough around the house to stop us shouting at them again about how many job applications they've made recently, I do have fond memories of the few months when we had the house to ourselves.

Cat, I didn't read it as her being a spoiled airhead at all. I read it as her being a teenage girl, even if she is at the far end of the teenage years. They aren't quite adults, not just yet. I'm glad she has "returned" as well!

Toucan, it's amazing! We talked on the phone last night for half an hour, such a difference from the one word responses I'd been getting all summer.

And bringing it back to travel, I really can't wait to go visit her and explore Tucson!

Oh,cat, I so loved your report and at least some part of its spirit is my future too. I actually had my husband sit down and read it, so he could visualize the chaos of that last summer, moving day and the like. Our oldest son has forgotten his entire suitcase when we went on a week's vacation once, so we could see him forgetting something major.

Do the boys need less stuff than the girls at Target? Maybe someone could clue me in on what all is being purchased these days, especially as some of the dorm rooms we've seen on tours are quite snug.

Fun read. My most memorable moving in story didn't go smoothly either.

My oldest DS returned to college for his second year a week early for marching band practice. As he had to sleep on someone's couch for a few days of practice until his dorm opened, he only took a few things with him. He packed our old beaten up van with his belongings so I could bring everything to him the morning after the dorm opened. We arranged for me to arrive early enough for us to unpack the van before band practice. The night before, I told him I'd call him on my way onto campus so he could meet me at the door of his dorm. Yes, yes. No problem.

Called as I entered campus. No response. Parked near the dorm. Still no response so I left a message. Sat in the van (late August, van has no A/C) waiting for him to return my call. Moved to a bench outside his dorm to avoid melting in the van and hoping the van wouldn't be towed from a university lot. Kept calling and calling. Nada. Finally walked into the all male dorm behind a kid who had come outside to smoke. Knocked on the door of his room. Nothing. Tried the handle. Unlocked. Walked into the dark room and called his name. There was a response of sorts. He was alive and sleeping through band practice at this point. Probably hungover. I. WAS. PISSED. I screamed, he left for practice, and I hauled his #%$&ing stuff in the room myself, put the key under the door and don't recall talking to him again until much later in the semester. The End.

amwosu, normally that would be so funny but again, there is that undertone of "next year this could be me!"

Cat I appreciate your list. The storage extenders and cords are things I hadn't thought of. I highly doubt the iron would get any use with him. For us it will really depend on if he picks a driving-distance college or one that needs a flight on what we bring versus what we buy. I read another college thread here on how people reserve their orders at Bed Bath and Beyond for pickup near campus.

I just read this out loud to SO and would hereby like to apologize for all the typos, left out and extra words. All I have to say in my defense is that my brain was fried from the previous days' emotional roller coaster!

You did a great job sharing your "journey", no apologies needed. How is your DD doing now?
