Although I have not stayed at either place, I have heard people comlain about the service at the Ritz. I would probably choose the Four Seasons instead.

Stay at the Four Seasons. It has one of the top restaurants in the city, Fountain, and is all and all better than the Ritz Carlton. When you are out and about, consider dining at Le Bec Fin, the best restaurant in the state, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art is always a nice way to spend an afternoon. Have a great celebration.

I have stayed at both the FS and the RC, and it is clear to me that the Ritz is the right choice.

Four Seasons:
Pros: Polished Service, Standardized Rooms
Cons: Sterile atmosphere, Standardized Rooms

Ritz Carlton
Pros: Best atmosphere in the city, great Club lounge, romantic

Cons: Good but not great location, Some rooms are small

The Ritz Carlton has created an incredible atmosphere in central Philly. First and foremost is the amazing Rotunda that attracts people in the building just for a peak. Add to that the little extras like an incredible nightly chocolate buffet, the Vault bar, live saxaphone entertainment, etc. and it is tough to beat for the Philly leisure travler. It is perfect for a romantic break, especially during the holidays. This hotel's atmosphere has the potential to be magical during Chritmastime.

The rooms vary in size and some do not have a bath tub. Nonethless, the all-marble bathrooms are far superior to that of the FS Philadelphia. To add a romantic touch and to ensure a room with a tub, order a service from the "bath butler". My wife thought it was heavenly. If possible, spring for a Club level room. The floor to ceiling wood Club room is my favorite in the Ritz system and has great views of the city.

The Four Seasons is also a very fine hotel. It is a far more simple property than the Ritz and he service is more consistent. The FS works for me if I am there on business and if the location suits my needs, but not for leisure since the Ritz opened. The bottom line is that you cant go wrong with either hotel, but the Ritz is the right choice given your circumstances.

Although the lobby of the Ritz is impressive, I agree that the service at the Four Seasons can't be beat. The Fountain Restaurant is one of the best in Philadelphia. The Sunday brunch there is supposed to be superb.
