Thanksgiving Weekend in New York City

Hi All,
I know the tree at Rockefeller Center will not be it yet Thanksgiving weekend but does anybody know if all the stores/store windows will be decorated yet?

I meant lit yet!

Some stores will be but most are late Nov./early in December. Other Fodorites, please correct me if this has changed since my Turkey-Day NYC visit a couple of years ago.

Someone told me that the filling of the balloons the day (night?) before is pretty cool. Where? Central Park? Can't remember!

Bettina, I've been several times for Thanksgiving (going again this year since my son's in the parade), and it seems to me that most stores are decorated by that time.

Usually, the tree in Rockefeller Center has been put in place, but it won't be lit up until the following week.

But overall, it's pretty Christmas-y.

Especially this year with the stores needing our help to have a better than forcast holiday season, you betcha that everything will be dressed to the 9's before Thanksgiving. I saw some of the stores last week already putting up holiday decorations, and most of the stores are already selling holiday decorations. I think you will see the season rushed just a little bit earlier this year.

The windows of the major department stores are usually revealed the week before Thanksgiving week.

The day after thnaksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year. It's "black Friday" - the day that large stores usually start to earn a profit for the year.

All the windows wil be completely decorated - and there will be huge lines to see them- or to do any shopping.

Blowing up the balloons takes place in the park next t the Mueum of Natural History. A lot of fun - but again a huge crowd.
