Thanksgiving in San Francisco
 

I'm thinking of doing a trip to California for about 12 days, over thanksgiving - and we would be in San Franscisco on Thanksgiving. What, if anything, is open then?

We spent Thanksgiving week in San Francisco this past year. We stayed in the Wharf area and pretty much everything was open the entire day. We also did a tour of Muir Woods and Salsilito. Salsilito was pretty much closed up but the "upside" was - no tourist. Muir Woods was also very empty but then again I liked it that way.

I'm not sure what else was open on Thanksgiving day since we didn't leave the Wharf area other the the tour.

tour of Muir woods and Sausilito? Did you like it? what did you do in Sausilito on that day?

We did not use that particular tour company. My wife made the reservations so I don't remember who we used. I enjoyed Muir Woods. It was very peaceful and we enjoyed the walk. We were there on Thanksgiving Day so it was not very crowded at all.

Salsilito was deserted. I think we were the only tour in town. We stayed for about an hour and maybe an hour and a half. There really wasn't much to do since there were only about 5 stores open. But it was a very quaint (at least it seemed that way since it was empty) town. We were dropped off at a big parking lot by the marina. We just walked from one end of town to the other. Went in the few shops that were open. We went back to the marina and took pictures from that side of the bay looking into San Francisco and Alcatraz. Went and checked out the yachts and then went back to the bus.

We have to plan our vacations around my 15 year old daughters holidays during the school year. We had a very good time in San Francisco and would recommend it.

Extranomical Adventures does a Muir Woods and Wine Country Tour by Van. Thats the best tour I have heard of when it comes to best value.

If you have time, check out the Yosemite and Giant Sequoias tour with Extranomical Adventures.

The weather is great in San Francisco and the best time to go to Yosemite is in a month or so when the snow is melting and the waterfalls are really flowing.

radiofanatic, several beautiful hotels in SF offer special Thanksgiving dinners. If you start checking the SF Chronical website which is www.sfgate.com sometime after the 1st of November you will see lots of information regarding Thanksgiving dinners in SF.

There will be tree lighting ceremonies in the city. And I like the suggestion to take a bus tour, but I can't recommend one ;)

Museums may be open, you'll have to check each one. Not all restaurants will be opened, so call ahead. Most stores will be closed.
