Thanksgiving in NYC with 5 yr old

I am taking my 5 year old child to NYC for Thanksgiving. I would like to stay in a hotel with a view of the parade so we can watch from our room. Any suggestions?

Be prepared to shell out big bucks. Many of those rooms may already be taken as they books months in advance.

You might try the Marriot Marquis in Midtown or The Mayflower Hotel on Central Park West.

Doubtful you will get a room at this late as Goth stated without paying lots of money, think at least $1,500 per night, I got a room with a view of a brick wall at the Plaza two years ago for $800 per night.

My suggestion would be to watch the balloon characters being inflated the night before (around 77th?) and watch the parade from your room.

i second that call. the hotel rates are hugely expensive and it is REALLY fun the night before to actually watch the baloons being inflated. you could then watch teh parade outside or wherever there's a big screen tv.

We have done this for 3 years now (started when kids were 6 & 3). The best I can find is the Excelsior Hotel @45 W 81st St. You only have a view of the balloons, but are close to the start of the parade, Museum of Natural History, and sidewalk is only open to residents/guests. Easy to go out and watch for a while and then go back in and watch the parade on TV. Nice hotel too. Book now for a room with a view of the balloons.

I've seen the parade many times, both from the street and from indoors(not a hotel but from my brother-in law's office). The expereince is MUCH better out of doors so long as weather is not horrible. Indoors you'll miss the sound and the perspective viewing the balloons, I think, are better from the ground then from above. I also like the thrill of being amongst others out of doors. My 2 cents is to save on the hotel and walk to the parade. Another thrill for your child might be seeing the balloons filled up the night? before the parade. Never did that, others have liked that.
