Thanksgiving in NYC

Hi.. I am a non American in NYC for Thanksgiving and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice of things to do on the day. I have planned to go to the American Museum of Natural History on the 21st November and see the balloon inflation. I have also been planning on going to the parade - going up to Central Park West location wise.

But I was wondering if there were any suggestions on what to do after the parade? Thanks

Thanksgiving is one of the few days when everything is closed - including many restaurants. Of those that are open, many will have multi-course traditional Thanksgiving dinners at set seatings (noon, 2 pm, 4 pm 6pm etc). If you're not up for that a number of ethnic restaurants may be open for more casuale meals - but do call in advance to check.

For many people it is a day spent with extended family - for big meals and watching football.

Things that are open in the city:
Staten Island ferry (runs 24/7/365) you can see the SoL in the distance and great views of the skyline on the way back - but on the open harbor can be cold and windy

Explore Central Park (check out the website of the Central Park Conservancy)

Top of the Rock - is open I believe but check the website

It's a good day to go to the movies since most are not crowded

You can certainly explore some of the more interestig neighborhoods but will almost all stores closed - not so interesting

Thanks nytraveler - I was thinking about maybe heading to the movies, then I thought "I'm in NYC on Thanksgiving, is it really acceptable to go to the movies?" Haha. I am not going to worry about restaurants to be honest as I am travelling alone.

I will check out the websites for Central Park & TOTR
