Thanksgiving in Charleston, SC?
Thinking of going to Charleston for Thanksgiving but have never been there before. At most we would have 5 days to spend - am wondering about maybe 3 days in the city and 2 on a beach close by? Would it be too cold for beaching it that time of year? Any suggestions or recommendations most appreciated!

You could easily spend all five days in Charleston.
Things to do: South Carolina Aquarium Tour to Ft. Sumter Carriage Ride House and Garden Tour Middleton Plantation Tour Boone Hall Plantation Tour Haunted Pub Tour Shopping Dining The Hunley IMAX Theater USS Yorktown The Charleston Museum (our nation's first) That is just the first few things that popped in my head. Stay downtown rather than out on the beaches. Much more to do. |
wow - thanks for the quick reply. Sounds like more than enough to keep us busy! Thank you.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but our family (16+-) is also going to be in Charleston for Thanksgiving and I am wondering if anyone familiar with the area knows of a good restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner that can handle a group of 16 or so.

samshack, how fun!
I would probably go for one of the hotel dinners with either Charleston Place or the Market Pavillion. Here is a tip, southerners eat Thanksgiving early so the buffets will be best between noon and 2PM. Make sure you try Low Country favorites like oyster stuffing and rice and gravy! |
Charleston Place does a lovely Thanksgiving meal and can easily accomodate your group. I have two friends who go every Thanksgiving and absolutely rave about it. Have fun!

Spend the day in Savannah - its a great contrast.

wow, this post looks so good, i'm thinking of doing the same thing! Thanksgiving in Charleston...what a country!

sweattea, aren't y'all the ones looking for a place between South Florida and Atlanta for Thanksgiving?
What about St. Augustine? Beautiful city. |
We were until I found out that we're doing a family trip with my DH and his family only three weeks prior! SO....I decided to NIX the big family T-giving and now we're on our own! Too much time together can be dangerous, you know?

Thanks for the suggestions. My wife and I stayed in Charleston a couple of years ago at Charleston Place hotel and loved it. Had dinner at Charleston Grill and it was superb. Never eaten at Market Pavillion so will check it out. I assume both Charleston Grill and Market Pavillion are buffet's?
We (wife and I) have hosted Thanksgiving (at our home in Sarasota FL) for the past half doz. years or so and this year just decided that we wanted to do something different. Earlier this year we told everyone that while we love hosting and being with our family we wanted to do a trip to Charleston this year and all who wanted to join us would be welcome. Happily, most of the family have decided to be part of it and so we are very excited about planning for and going on this trip. |
We were in Charleston for Thanksgiving last year. It is lovely and there is a lot to see. I wouldn't break it up and stay near the beach, as you can drive to beaches like Isle of Palms in a matter of minutes. I wouldn't really count on swimming though, as I doubt it will be warm enough. The beaches were quite empty when we were there, which was nice. We took a long walk along the quiet beach.
I haven't been to Savannah yet, but we did get to Beaufort, which is along the way. Its a very nice, charming small town with neat shops and restaurants; certainly worth a few hours or an afternoon. Tracy |
Travelled to 40 plus countries - seen 10,000 plus towns - Beaufort, SC - comes in at No 1. (for us)

Hi there, we'll be travelling to Charleston and Savannah in mid November for 10 nights. How do we get from Charleston to Savannah? Is it best to rent a car or is there a bus service?
|
You should rent a car. Take I95 North and exit onto Hwy.17. The exit will be marked Charleston.
