Thanksgiving Drive from DC

Hello -

Anybody have any great ideas for a trip (driving) from DC during the Thanksgiving weekend. We have 4 days and a few friends are coming over...

Great ideas are appreciated :)

How far do you want to drive. Is it with the friends or to avoid them?

You mean a day trip somewhere?

That time of year I like to head south.

The outer banks of North Carolina is a reasonable drive. The weather will be a bit warmer and there is plenty open even though it's off season.

Bonus: You have endless options for renting a nice beach house for 1/3 (or less!) what you would pay in the summer.

We often take the train to Philly for the day--do you mean a day trip, or for the whole weekend?

Really depends on your interests. As you know, you can reach lots of interesting places from DC within an easy half-days' drive. So, what do you all like to do?

Sorry if I misrepresented.. I meant a day getaway along with friends.

We are looking to rent a car.. Any drive upto 15 hours oneway or 35-40 hours roundtrip will work :)

Outer Banks seems like a great idea :)

That does not sound like a day getaway but an overnight trip (at least). Hopefully someone will be able to say if traffic is bad on 95 going south of DC on that weekend.

Colonial Williamsburg.

You can drive to St. Louis, MO in under 15 hours from DC. But would you want to do that in 4 days? Over the Tgiving holiday?

I'm not real clear on what you have in mind.

Any trip involving I-95, north or south from DC, over the Tgiving holiday has the potential to be a traffic nightmare.

Maryland eastern shore maybe? Mountains? What are your interests? Are you intending to stay overnight(s)? If so, have you considered booking ahead b/c of the holiday?

I so agree with obxgirl. When I lived in DC I stayed there for Thanksgiving. It's a quiet weekend and I didn't have to fool with trying the crowds trying to leave and come back.

The Banks would be nice. So would Charlottesville, but travel on Thursday and come back on Saturday.

I agree with obxgirl too except I have to disagree with the word "potential". Traffic on 95 WILL be a nightmare so I would go in any direction that avoids 95. The eastern shore to VA Beach would be nice.
