Thanksgiving Dinner in Williamsburg
 

Will be in Williamsburg on Thanksgiving with two kids age 9 and 11. Are there any restaurants offering a Thanksgiving meal either afternoon or early evening sitting?

The Williamsburg Inn and Lodge will be serving a traditional Tgiving meal as will most if not all of the colonial taverns. Book through the main Colonial Williamsburg number. Many of the other larger hotels in town will also be serving. Where are you staying?

I would recommend Indian Fields Tavern, a lovely restaurant in an old farm house in the countryside about 30 minutes out of Wmburg. I've also heard that a new place in town, The Blue Talon, will be open. I had dinner there on Monday and it was terrific.

Otherwise restaurants are touch and go. The Trellis (not my fave but a very popular place) is closed on Tgiving.

Hey, Thanks so much for the recommendations. As of now I have a room booked at the HI Express in Williamsburg. However, I'm open to all suggestions. I've been looking at some B&Bs which look great, however, with boys aged 9 and 11 I think a more generic accommodation may be better. But, please suggest away cause I am really game for anything. Thanks.

The HI Express is just fine. I appreciate wanting to stay at a known chain when travelling with kids. We do it too.

I think the main thing for you to do is to get a booking soon. I live in Wmbg, but if I were visiting for Tgiving, I'd shoot first for one of the colonial taverns. The colonial "ambience" will make it a memorable occasion.

After that I'd opt for Indian Fields Tavern, Blue Talon (if open) or the Wmbg Lodge, not really in any particular order. You'll see plenty of families there and the food will range from good to quite good.

Another possibility is the Kingsmill Resort. There are probably some others I'm missing, hope someone else will chime in too.

With kids, I'd skip the Wmbg Inn. Way too stuffy, formal and expensive for kids.

What type and what price range, "travel_chef1"? I have stayed at a number of the area chain hotels, and visit the area frequently.

I am looking for a "3 star" hotel or inn. Something nice, not a chain, if I can avoid it. We will have a newborn with us. No more than $150 -$200 a night. Any ideas? Thanks very much for your help, as I do not know Willamsburg--it will be our first time there.

I don't pay much attention to "stars", but I guess for non-chain, 3 stars, you'd be considering the Hospitality House, a walkable distance to the historic area, or the Colonial Williamsburg hotels themselves. One of my favorite places, but would probably weigh in at 2 stars is the Governor Spottswood, located next door to the Holiday Inn Express. Family owned & operated, very friendly & hospitable service ... a 40s/50s motel actually.

While I've never stayed at the Quality Inn Lord Paget, on Capital Landing Road, I've driven thru the property and like the looks of it ... it would probably be borderline at 2/3 stars. While it's technically a chain, I think you might find the "chain" part of the operation as just setting some minimal standards. I've never checked Raves nor Tripadvisor about this place tho. Maybe obxgirl has heard something?
I almost forget to mention Princess Anne Inn? (Princess Anne SOMETHING, anyway) on Richmond road, between Monticello/Lafayette and the west end of Bypass Rd. Beautiful little "cabins" of mostly 2 units each, and run more like a spread-out bed & breakfast.

Brain kind of foggy at 1:30am, I'll try to think of some more ... I think there's some hotels in Kingsmill that are not chain.

Check the website mywilliamsburgvacation.com It's operated by the local hotel/motel association, and sometimes had some great deals, expecially for the non-chain hotels.

When ours was very young, we always appreciated a suites accommodation. So in addition to the properties rb_trav has recommended, I might also suggest some of the resort communities in the Wmbg area. They are not all independents but the properties do not have that "chainy" feel. My choices would be:

Marriott Manor Club at Fords Colony
Greensprings Plantation Resort
Powhaten Plantation Resort

I'd also recommend the best, Kingsmill Resort, but given the popular time you're visiting, I'm fairly certain their prices will be above the range you've stated.

I'm sure Obxgirl will get back to you on this anyway but to let you know Indian Fields is right on Rt. 5 in Charles City. It takes 1/2 hour from Wmsbg. A perfect destination on a lovely fall evening or for Sunday brunch.
Kingsmill will have a couple of dining options on Thanksgiving. Not a colonial atmosphere but a pretty one overlooking the river.
