Thanksgiving Day in New York
 

My brother and his wife and teenage son are taking their first trip to NYC this Thanksgiving week. They have done a great job of planning, and will have Thanksgiving dinner at Peter Lugers in Brooklyn. I have suggested various things for Thanksgiving Day such as checking out Brighton Beach, Park Slope, etc., looking at Department store tree decorations etc. However, if it is raining, does anyone know if any museums will be open on Thanksgiving Day itself? From what I've been able to find out so far, the answer is "no," but I thought a New Yorker might know of a relatively obscure museum that will be open.

Anyone home from work with any answers?

I just thought I'd give your question a boost back up the of the top of the list.
Every museum I can think of is closed at least 2 days of the year--Xmas and Thanksgiving.

Thanks, All. Looks like NYC is "closed" for Thanksgiving, except for one downtown historical walking tour.

Public spots like Grand Central Station, and Central park are always an option.

Are they going to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade - that might be fun for them to do in the earlier part of the day.

Thanksgiving is the single best day to just walk around the city in the whole cultural calendar. Tell your family to bring an umbrella in case of rain (usually not), and just walk around Rockefeller Center, up and down Fifth Avenue, through Times Square and ride the subway. It's rarely uncomfortably cold, the good feeling among the parade-watchers is spectacular, and it's a ton of fun. They'll get enough of the museums another day.

avoid everything from about 34th street to the west side of central park unless you're really into crowds.

even after the parade is over, it's pure bedlam.

it's a good day to visit other parts of the city.
