THANKS! HBR info was most helpful, now...
Reading through all of your favorite restaurants, I would love to compile a good group of choices for our trip.
Breakfast (small with a view)
inexpensive
Lunch (small with a view)
inexpensive to moderate
Dinner (I like islandmom's idea of a drink, a view, and a nice salad)
(prices can vary)
We also like to walk places if that's possible when staying at the HBR. Anywhere near the water would be my 1st choice.
Thanks to all.

There's a walkway from HBR down to the beach. They'll take you down there or bring you back in one of the golf carts if you call (there's a phone at beach end too). Don't remember much else for walking out of there except the walk way along the road/golf course. We had lunch at the Hanalei Dolphin once, was quite nice, good setting. The tiger prawn appetiser in HBR bar is great but their drinks are a bit puny we thought. Have a great trip.

I believe the Princeville Hotel is the only walking distance option for meals outside of HBR. There is small shopping center next to the Princeville Fountain (where you turn to enter the Princeville Resort Area to get to HBR or Princeville Hotel) that has a supermarket, bank, and small shops, you might find something there. We usually drove into the town of Hanalei for coffee (e.g. Postcards) and breakfast, for desert: shave ice from a van (see Ultimate Guide to Kauai) etc.
