Thank you dinner in San Francisco?

Hello All,
I want to take my friend out for a nice dinner to thank her for her hospitality.
I wanted a great place that's special that's classic San Francisco (more for me).
Nothing too pricey but something still special that a PhD student wouldn't normally treat herself too.
Preferably not Italian or Mexican (those are already lines up) just great local fresh cuisine or something really not to be missed.
Thanks for the help!

It's hard to beat the Tadich Grill for someplace "that's classic San Francisco".

Tadish was my first thought, and if you can swing it, Chez Panisse is another. To make CP more affordable, how about lunch?

How much is too pricey? What is your budget?

Aziza - California/Moroccan. Michelin 1 star, 3 1/2 stars in the Chronicle. One of our favorites. Geary & 22nd. Get the "fixed price" menu and enjoy the flavors !!!

Just wanted to say that we ate at Aziza last night and it is wonderful. Very inventive. We did NOT get the tasting menu (too much food -- it would have been extra nibbles, soup course and dessert course that we didn't need --- we had 4 first courses, 4 main courses, couscous side, and 1 shared dessert, and it was the perfect amount of food). Delicious, but fairly pricey at $178 for two (tax tip and 2 cocktails each included).

How do you know it would have been too much food if you didn't order it. Often tasting menus offer smaller portions.

2 5 course tasting menus...$124
2 drinks..........................$ 20
total..............................$144
tax................................$ 12
tip.................................$ 28

Dinner total.....................$184

I would have gladly accepted your leftovers - if any. You could have left them on our front porch.

We dined at Mochica (Peruvian) in SOMA last night

Monster fog !!!

Actually - I see now that you actually had 10 courses - same as the tastine menu.

Stu, the fog in the Richmond/Sunset was "real" SF fog -- like we haven't seen in a long time!

Two wonderful neighborhood spots in the Castro are L'ardoise (http://www.ardoisesf.com/) and Frances (if you can get in there) http://www.frances-sf.com/. Both are small and intimate with great food and not overly pricey.
