Texas wildflowers. When and where?
 

I've heard the Fredericksburg area has beautiful flowers and Settlers Crossing Inn seem right up my alley. I'd appreciate any info from those in the know. Thanks.<BR><BR>

I don't know about Fredericksburg but we were in Texas in late April last year. <BR>From Big Bend to Del Rio the prickly pear cactus was blooming and once we hit Del Rio and headed east to the Louisiana border we saw blankets of wildflowers on the side of the road. It was beautiful and the flowers changed by the mile.<BR><BR>Utahtea

You'll find the wildflowers along most highways in central and eastern TX, from north to south. Even as unlikely a route as LBJ (I-635) out of DFW heading for Dallas is just loaded with them in April. The hillsides have been seeded and the display is spectacular. One of the best known routes is the Bluebonnet trail. It's a spectacular time to see the state, although the Hill Country is lovely any time of year.

I lived in the Bryan/College Station area for several years and really care nothing about flowers. However, every April when the bluebonnets burst on the scene I would find myself driving every road in the area to look at their incredible beauty. It's something to see.

I think early April is the right time to go, but I'd check with the B&amp;B just to make sure. The bluebonnet display all over the eastern half of the state is amazing. Wildseed Farms, near Stonewall and the Grape Creek winery, grows a lot of this seed. I'd make a special trip just to see their test gardens in bloom.

Fredericksburg is the main destination for people traveling to the Texas &quot;hill country&quot; any time of the year. It has wonderful shops, antique stores, restaurants and history. In the spring that whole part of the state is blanketed in wildflowers. <BR><BR>You are close to San Antonio, Austin and New Braunfels which are all wonderful towns to visit . San Marcos has a HUGE outlet mall--actually it is three outlet malls in one place.<BR><BR>If you like water, Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels has been voted the best water park in the country year after year by the Travel Channel. <BR><BR>In the same area is the Guadalupe River, Texas' best river to tube.<BR><BR>
