It's a good time to go to avoid the crowds. That's a definite plus. It may be a little chilly. We were there early September and mornings were already cool. You might ever have a little snow!
But, don't let any of this discourage you! Go, it's great country!
You might be a little late for the foliage, but I'm not sure. Maybe someone from Wyoming can fill you more definitively.
If you have any more questions, fire away!

Hi, normally we have wonderful Indian Summers until the middle of October...warm days and cool crisp nights. It is the locals favorite time of year. It can snow anytime but usually just a quick dusting that makes the mountains even more beautiful....lots of animal activity as they migrate to the valley floor for winter. The colors are warm and wonderful, but the aspens have normally lost their leaves by then. A great time to come, you will love it!! Sherrie

I just got back from Yellowstone and I was in no hurry to leave. The geysers to me are fascinating. We watched Grand Geyser and Castle Geyser erupt by the light of a full moon. A magical experience indeed.

One fact you should consider is that lodges in Yellowstone start closing soon. I picked up a list of accommodations with the opening and closing times. The closings are important now, and they are as follows: Canyon Lodge and Cabins close Sept 12; Grant Village closes Oct 3;
Lake Lodge Cabins close Sept 12;
Lake Yellowstone Hotel closes Oct 3;
Mammoth Hot Springs hotel and cabins close Oct 11; Old Faithful Lode cabins close September 19; Old Faithful Inn closes Oct 11, while the Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Cabins stay open until Oct 17.
If you want to stay in the park, I recommend that you act now. The website is www.amfac.com.
You can reserve on-line.
I like the Snow Lodge Cabins, but at $107 per night, including tax, they are a little pricey. The rooms in the Snow Lodge, a new facility, go for $121 plus tax. Premium rooms in Old Faithful Inn go for $142, plus tax, while rooms without a bath fo for $52. If you want to splurge like a high roller, get a suite for $325 per night.
Snow can come in mid October, which is one reason the closing seem early. But part of it is that it is the end of the season and expenses outrun income.
Greg,

We just returned last evening from the Teton/Yellowstone area. My husband and I stayed at a wonderful Inn outside Jackson. The location was excellent as we used this as our 'base' for eight days. Only 1 hour to Yellowstone. Tetons spectacular and you could easily spend one week in this area, without fear of boredom. You may have accomodations 'booked', but since you mention your anniversary, our Inn [consisting of 5 rooms, one suite] was outstanding.
I'd be happy to suggest 'tips'. Are you staying in the park? During our day trips, we checked out many properties. Would recommend 'Wildflower Inn' without reservation. This was our first trip, but will not be our last visit!
