Terror Attacks in New York?
Hello All!
I was thinking of coming to New York at 10-20 September. Is it a bad time? I read here that the Republican Convention will take place, but when exactly? Also, i read about possible terror attacks etc... have they said anything about that? I'm coming from Greece so it will be a long trip and my first to the US and i want to have the best time possible! What do you suggest? Maybe leave New York for another time? thanks! |
Coming to US and not seeing NYC would be a shame. There are no predictions of attacks. There are no guarantees anywhere in the world now so just travel and have a good time.
The convention is in August. |
The Republican convention will be over when you will be in the city. September is a great time to visit NYC. Things shouldn't be too crowded and the weather should be great.
|
The RNC convention is August 30-September 2nd. You'll be fine.

Our whole family has similar thoughts about going to Greece during Olympic. My little sister will be competing and we all are going to Athens and then to Peloponneese for one more week. We understand there are no guarantees anywhere in the world. We wish you a peaceful, worry free visit to New York City.

cristine - Yes, go to NY! NY is wonderful in the early fall. The weather should be great.
Don't worry about terrorists - they can attack anytime, anywhere. You won't be in any more danger there than any other big city, and you can't predict if and when anything will happen. I live in DC but was actually in Chicago when on 9/11/01, and I was in Madrid 2 weeks before the bombing there this past March. We cannot live our lives in fear. Please enjoy your trip to the US! Pat:
Congrats to your sister. How very cool! Ken |
Thanks to all for the replies!
I know that right now, nowhere in the world is safe, and that's really a pity! And you're right.. i have the same chances of a terrorist attack, here in Athens, as in New York, London or Australia... It's just that i've read in here some things about terrorism during that period and that's why i've made the question! Pat2003 i wish you a great time here in Greece too!! (and good luck to your sister) |
It would be a wonderful thing if any of us could predict a terrorist attack.
Come to NYC and have fun. |
They arrested a terrorist suspected of trying to blow up a Mall here in Ohio. No place is immune. You can' live your life in fear...Go and have a great time.
|
Go and have fun. There won't be a terrorist attack unless the Ministry of Fear really needs one.
|
I'd be more worried about getting run over while crossing a street in NYC than a terrorist attack.
|
Or in an accident with a cabbie! :)
Yes, some "experts" suspect an increased chance of terrorists attacks surrounding the conventions and also the elections in November, but no one really ever knows. I wouldn't postpone my trip on the chance that something would happen at that time of year because it seems there is no rhyme or reason to their attacks. After all, Sept. 11 was just an ordinary day ... until everything happened, of course. |
Please come!! The weather will be perfect in September, not too hot and lots of sunshine, we are getting all the rain out of the way the last few days, lol. We were thinking about building an ark in the backyard with all the rain (12 inches in just one day in parts of New Jersey).
All fun aside, that time of year is my favorite as all the restaurants have sidewalk cafes, there is less tourism since schools are back in session. If you have any other questions please let us know and we will all try to help. |

How wonderful..Wishing your sister all the very best- your family must be so proud. |
You convinced me ;-)
I have just booked the air tickets!!! I'm so looking forward to this trip!:-) I'll post a new message in the following days, because i need your help about the places 'New Yorkers' go (and not tourists)! |
Thank you LordBalfor, Cristine27 and Indie. I will let Bella know about your wishes.
Christine27, because this is your first visit to the US do not dismiss certain places visited by tourists. In Greece, Delphie is a place where so many tourists go and it is always crowded. Yet, IMHO, it is such an amazing place it shouldn't be missed by anyone visiting Greece. We don't have anything to be compared to Delphie but we have some very intersting and unique places visited by many tourists. Are you going to stay for 10 days in New York City or would you like to visit other places as well? Keep in mind there is more to New York than New York City. |
Pat2003,
of course i'll go to all the touristic places as well, but i would like to eat, or go to bars that are not for tourists. And i'm saying that, because here in Athens also the best clubs, restaurants etc are not in the touristic places. Yes, i'm thinking of staying 10 days (actully 9) in New York City. Of course if we'll get bored or want to see something else, we plan to make short excursions. It all depends on the mood! We don't want to rush things, you know! Do you have any suggestions about short trips nearby?? |
