Tennesse for Relocation/Retirement?
 

Yes,yet another question regarding relocation/retirement destination. I live in Michigan on a small lake. Love change of seasons but do not want the extremes anymore - no snow storms - no 100 degree, 99% humidity! MUST BE ON A LAKE!!! We always toyed with the idea of the Carolina's, but think that going inland on a lake versus the ocean would be more economical.

I have been to the different relocation sites and haven't found anything to help me find water destinations.

Any help is welcome!

Do you know in which area of Tennesee you're interested? We're originally from the Chattanooga area.

But Tennessee is very humid in the summer! Chattanooga area very seldom gets snow storms, but when it does snow, the city shuts down. We'ver never owned a snow shovel.

There are beautiful lakes in the Chattanooga area. I also think Knoxville would be a good retirement area (especially if you love Tennessee Volunteer football!!!)

I dont' really have an area in Tennessee that I'm interested in. Just some place on a nice size lake, with reasonable housing costs.

Are there any specific lakes that you can name in the Chat or Knoxville area? I have visited both areas in the past and loved them both.

We have stayed on Norris Lake north of Knoxville (& close to LaFollette) several times. It is a nice man-made (TVA) water level controlled lake. There are several other Lakes in the immedidate area as well. Norris seems to be rife w/retired folks, primarily from the Midwest as well as many rentals. www.vrbo.com would probably be a good place to start if you'd care to check out the area.

We live in Middle Tenn. and love it here, but this week we are having a major heat wave-100+ days for the last
four days. Center Hill Lake is near
here and it is beautiful.

There are lots of places along the Tennessee River. North of Chattanooga is Soddy Lake, which is a nice (though rural) area. I'll try to think of more.

The North Georgia Mountains are a popular retirement area. Check out Hiawassee close to Murphy NC. Lake Chatuge is a beautiful mountain lake and it is considerably cooler there than the normal Southern climate. Good luck with your search.

We considered Fairfield Glade, a very large retirement community right off I-40, about half way between Nashville & Knoxville on the Cumberland Plateau. It offers acres of woods, hiking/biking trails, subdivisions of homes and/or condos, several lakes and golf courses and it also is home to a large timeshare/resort. Nothing seems 'packed' together, but spread out. Do a search for Fairfield Glade and read about the area. If our kids hadn't moved to SW FL, we would be in Fairfield, not here.

Lake Cumberland is located in southern Kentucky, not far from Somerset and Bowling Green. The Army Corps of Engineers has lowered the level of the lake somewhat while they repair a major dam, but there is still plenty of water while they are working. If you are interested, I can get you a website of a development.

Like Tennessee, Kentucky gets its share of hot weather in July and August, but we don't usually have much really cold weather and our springs and falls are beautiful.

Sorry, I meant to say also that Land Between the Lakes in western KY is listed as being one of the choice places for retirement in the U.S.
