Ten Hour Layover In Newark
We have a ten hour layover in Newark before taking an 8:30p.m. flight to Europe.
Does anyone know if there is a hotel that has day rates? I know we could go into Manhattan, but we just would rather relax for the time. We can go to an airline lounge (I am a member) but that seems like a long time. Thanks |
Anyone?

I would call all the hotels on this site and ask them about day rates.

Thanks. I did call the Marriott. They will not tell me until the day we arrive if there is a room available and it is $125 for 8 hours.
It is the not telling us that I don't like. |
You may find that with everybody. Its a matter of room availability - Would you rather hold a room for someone that just needs it for a day or somebody that will pay full room rate for the day / night?
|
It is the not telling us that I don't like.
You can always rent the room overnight (for full price) and you won't have to deal with this issue. But what is Marriott going to do with a room that you vacate at 6 p.m.? They won't tell you in advance because they'd rather rent the room for a full stay than day use. (P.S. I checked the AAA rate for June 6th (just randomly) and it's $143.00) |
But there's still a big problem if the OP book a regular room. They arrive 10:30a in the morning. Check-in times at most hotels are 3p.
|
You're right, so I guess they'll have to play it by ear. There's certainly no obligation on the hotel's part, however, to "use" a room for day use for a cheaper price.
|
Are you sure how long your layover will really be?
What time does your plane usually arrive (versus when it's scheduled)? Is this all one ticket with luggage checkd through - or will you have topickit up and recheck it and go through security? You may find you only have 5 or 6 hours - and not 10 - and the club lounge may be good enough. And agree - the hotel may not let you get into a room early enough to be of any use - since it sounds like they won;t scheduled a day room until they have a very good idea they won't sell if for the night. |
One of the problems is that the original flight to Europe was cancelled and we were put on a later flight.
Another problem is that this flight is out of Newark and the flights between Pittsburgh and Newark are not very customer friendly. There are only two flights direct and the later one was filled. Our plane arrives in Newark at 10:00a.m. Our luggage is checked through from Pittsburgh. The only thing we have to contend with is hand luggage. Even if we arrive late, like noon, it is still eight hours. Our plane leaves Newark at 8:30 p.m. I can understand if they want rent a room, they would rather get the overnight fee. That is just good business. And I do think that with a check in time of at least 3:00pm, it isn't very much help. Also, if we rent it for the previous night we will probably have to vacate at noon or earlier. I did send an email to www.newarkairporthotelguide.com asking if they had a listing for day rates with the hotels but have not received an answer yet. Thanks |
You flying USAirways? Connecting to what airline?
Because Continental flies PIT-EWR 7x daily. |
If you are really bored you could catch a cab to either IKEA or Jersey Gardens mall. You will have to call a cab for the return though, as there will not be a taxi stand at either of those locations.
And it really is not enough time to go into Manhattan. |
We are flying US Airways. And you should look at that schedule of flights.
Only two go direct. The others connect through DC and Charlotte, etc. I really don't relish getting stuck in either of those places. So we will take our lumps. Maybe we will take a cab. Thanks |
But where are you going? Connecting to which airline?
The reason I ask is that when an airline cancels a flight and have to reschedule you, you have a wide amount of flights to choose from, as long as there is last-seat availability. So, you can request rerouting through PHL or CLT to various flights on US or partners to Europe. You don't have to stick with EWR, which has few US and partner flights to start with. |
rkkwan. We are flying US Airways Pittsburgh to Newark connecting to TAP to Lisbon. That is our final destination.
US Airways does offer other partner flights through CLT or PHL but they all have double connects to Lisbon. For example: PIT-PHL-FRA-LIS. Our flight is PIT-EWR-LIS. A very good choice. The only problem was when TAP cancelled the earlier flight from EWR and put us on the 8:30 flight. That is what made the layover time so long. So we will just suck it up. I am lucky to have only one connect to our final destination. I was just trying to make the layover a little more comfortable. Thanks |
