Telluride for a week in July...Good idea?
My wife and I are planning a week's vacation in the Telluride area (we've never been to CO.), and would like some input on whether there's enough to do for a week.
Any other areas to see(we'll have a car)?
Also, what is the nearest airport we should fly into?
Thanks for the info.

There is soooooo much to do in the Telluride area. If you look at a map, you will see a loop from Telluride, Mesa Verde, Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Black Canyon and back to Telluride. IMO this is one of the most scenic areas of all the Rockies.

There is a small airport in Telluride but Santa Fe might be cheaper.

Check our Durango, Silverton and Ouray on the web. Jeeping old mining trails is a great thing to do in Ouray. They also put on a fabulous fourth of july fireworks show there.

The train from Durango to Silverton is a MUST. I suggest taking the train up and the bus back. It is just too long round trip.
Connie-thanks for the information,we will definitely do the loop and the train. How long will the drive be from Santa Fe to Telluride area?
Also, any suggestions on hotels in the area, 4-star or better?
Thanks

Another poster on this site just recommended a great website for info. on the area.

www.twenj.com (traveling with Ed n Julie)

I don't know about hotels--we camp.

Pardon me if this is a repeat; my prior response seems to have been lost in cyberspace.

Telluride is great. Between it and the surrounding area, you'll keeep busy for a week. I know nothing about Telluride hotels, but since it's such an upscale place overall, I'm sure you can find a four star establishment.

I'd fly into Telluride itself, if possible. I read last year that there was a major carrier beginning to fly into Montrose, about 90 minutes or less from Telluride. (I'm not sure about the time). Grand Junction and Durango are other airport choices. Santa Fe is probably at least 6 hours away, so I wouldn't fly into there unless I just wanted to enjoy the drive - it would certainly be beautiful, but the area around Telluride would be the highlight anyway.

Telluride is a great place in the summer. The locals say "winter brings them, summer makes them stay". We bought a home in Telluride after 2 summer stays.

Hotels: In Telluride we stayed at he Hotel Columbia. Highly recommended. In town next to the Gondola. Small hotel, we always stayed in the "penthouse". It's a onne bedroom suite. On the mountain, there is the Wyndam Peaks Hotel with its much acclaimed "Golden Door Spa". Much larger hotel than the Columbia with all the full service amenities. But I'd stay at the Columbia. Also, alot of condos rent for the week. Check out Alpine Lodging for the best selection.
