Hanauma Bay is wonderful - if you consider that it is probably the most popular snorkeling location on Oahu and clogged with people during the day. The lines often stretch around the large parking lot, the lot runs out of spaces, it costs money, and you're required to watch a short video before actually getting to the beach. BUT it's a drastically different experience early early in the morning, around 6:15, when there are few people, the ticket office is bypassed, and the makeshift cinema hasn't opened yet. You'll have a peaceful beach for a couple hours at least.*Note* I have never rented snorkeling equipment here, so I don't know how early the shop is open. I might rent one near your hotel or go without; yes snorkeling enhances the experience, but it is sometimes a hassle to obtain the equipment, test and fit it to your face. It does take time, and one of the great things about Hanauma is that if you aren't going to go really far out anyway, you can often hang with just as much sea life with your bare eyes (just my feeling, feel free to disagree). Have a fantastic trip!
