Tell me about Graceland !!
 

Going to be in Memphis in Sept. Want to see Graceland-have you been? I am also interested in Beale Street.

<BR>Beale street is great. Graceland is <BR>gaudy and overrated. The National <BR>Civil Rights Museum (formerly the <BR>Lorraine Motel - where MLK was <BR>killed) is incredible. Highly <BR>recommended!!!

I agree with the message before me. Beale St. is wonderful! Unless you're a huge Elvis fan, Graceland is not a big deal. The Peabody Hotel ducks are fun. We also did a riverboat ride. Nice city but hot and humid! <BR>

Graceland may be over rated, but I think you have to go - once. We did it and enjoyed it. I love the Peabody. Walk across the street from the Peabody into the Downtown Alley for ribs at the Rendez-vous. I always end up at the Rum Boogie on Beale Street. Something I've never done but have heard is good is Sun Studios. Have a good trip.

I agree with Meg. Graceland is a must if you're in Memphis - whether you are an Elvis fanatic or not. It's interesting to be there to see his life, but it's also interesting to see what they have turned it into - the commercialism of the whole thing, the fanaticism (he still gets flowers every day from at least one person in this world). And then hit Beale Street in the evening after spending the afternoon at Graceland. <BR>

I've never been to Graceland but on a whim I borrowed "Elvis, Inc." from the local library. It's a quick read and an absolutely fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of the Graceland/Elvis organization. It details (in an unflinching and sometimes less than complimentary way) the financial circumstances of his career and the hows/whys of Graceland being opened to the public. I'm not an Elvis fan but was intrigued and would love to visit there, having read the book. Strongly recommended as background material. <BR>

Hey George-we were just in Memphis and although I'm not a big Elvis fan, I thought Graceland was very interesting (much different from what I thought it would be) and if you're in Memphis you should definitely go and at least tour the house. Rendevous was a great restaurant for ribs and if you really want to get in touch with your inner Elvis, you can stop by Elvis Presley's Memphis on Beale Street and have a peanut butter and banana sandwich! Enjoy! <BR>

Hey George, I'm not an Elvis "fan" and almost didn't go to Graceland. I am glad that I did. It was worth the experience. I booked my reservation in advance and avoided the ticket line. Go to their web page for all the information. Beale Street is a must. They close the street from traffic in the PM and if you eat at Elvis' Memphis restaurant, you can valet park there. If you go during the day, the restaurant parking lot is free.You can find a walking tour of Beale St. on the net that has all the history and info you want. If you have a car and like gambling, a 1/2 hour drive south is Tunica, MS which has many casinos and hotels...it was a fun place. If you have any specific questions you can e-mail me. Went to Graceland and it was totally different than what I expected. Yes it was a pretty mansion but not nearly as big and wonderful as you think it would be for the KING. Its in a country setting in the middle of the city. Kind of strange. I had seen the inside on t.v. but its so small in person. There is a Hawaiian room upstaris complete with waterfall that seems weird in a Georgian mansion. Then in the basement in the pool room or t.v. room all done in black. I can't imagine all those people who cloistered around him in there. Then you go out to the garage and see the pink cadillac and then there is an add on that displays all of his gold albums. Its a long narrow room thru which they funnel you. In that room the crowd pushed us so hard I was separated from my toddler. I was forced out into the garden near Elvi's grave- couldn't find my son and began sprinting all over the grounds, begging help of the security guards. Got to see a lot more than I paid for !! he he! They finally found him toddling around. Whew! Across the street the museum is great. I bought a crystal mug with the Graceland emblem on it and proudly display it 12 years later. <BR>
