Teenagers in Boston
 

My family of four is taking a trip to Boston for about 2 1/2 days. We are traveling with a 16 year old girl and 12 year old boy. We have tickets to a baseball game, plan on walking the freedom trail and a Duck Tour. What else should we be doing?

Have dinner in Boston's North End which is across the street from the Quincy Market area. Visit the Museum of Science laser show and maybe IMAX theater depending on what they are showing. See the Blue Man Group at night. If you like Chinese food, have a dim sum lunch at one of the restaurants in Chinatown. They roll carts of food thru the restaurant and you pick what you want. Each plate usually has 4 small servings so if you don't like something you're not wasting a lot of money. Most of the food will not be familiar but it's an experience. If your Boston visit is on a Fri or Sat, visit the pushcart vendors near Quincy Market. You might pick up some fresh fruit for snacking. Saturdays are very crowded. Much quieter on Fridays. Visit an Italian bakery for pastries. Walk down Newbury St. Boston is quite a mixture of architecture and streets.

Go to Harvard Square, eat at Fire and Ice. The kids will love it.

Not sure if a tour of Fenway would be redundant as you're going to a game - but it could also enhance the experience.

The New England Aquarium is also a great idea for teens, and they have an IMAX theater as well.

If you're planning on a Duck Tour, be sure to book ahead. They depart from Museum of Science (which is outstanding), so you may want to plan accordingly.

And, you may want to avoid "Super Duck" tour - I've read/heard it's an inferior "imitation".

Summer Shack is a wonderful place to take the kids for seafood, or any number of places on Northern Ave.

Not a fan of Summer Shack: overpriced and mediocre food in loud digs. Neptune Oyster in the North End does significantly better seafood.

And while the kids may like the Harvard Square Fire and Ice, adults with working taste buds likely won't. Mr. Bartley's does excellent burgers and comfort food at a reasonable price.

I highly recommend taking the ferry from behind Quincy Market to the harbor islands - particularly George's Island with old fort remnants.

Depending on where you leave for the Duck Tours, might depend on what you do -

if you depart from Museum of Science, maybe take in something there, look at their site and see if there is something in the theater or exhibits for them -

if you depart from Prudential , get them to walk into the Boston Public Library - it is free so you won't "waste money' if you only spend 20 minutes in there - but just if you can get them to walk through the building - see the Sargent murals, etc and walk out - they may spend more time than you think !
