TEENAGE SHOPPERS LOOKING FOR BARGAINS
 

Hi, travelling to NYC with 2 teenagers who aswell as seeing the sights want to do some shopping. They won't be interested in the expensive shops, they'll want to go where they can get jeans, t-shirts & trainers at prices cheaper than the UK. Where should we be looking?

I would suggest Old Navy in Midtown (near Macy's).

You should take them up to the Woodbury Commons in Harriman, NY. You should be able to make arrangements for a bus with your hotel. It is a HUGE outlet shopping center about 1 1/2 hours north of the city.

Canal Jeans on Broadway & Spring and the stores along that area of lower Broadway is a good place to walk around. I don't know if they're cheap, but teens also like Urban Outfitters (lots of stores - Broadway & Bleecker, 2nd Ave & 10th St, upper west side at 72nd & Broadway, 6th Ave & 13th St).

Loopy, if you can spare the time away from sightseeing I strongly urge you to take the bus at Port Authority to either Woodbury Commons in Harriman, New York or Jersey Gardens Mall in Elizabeth, New Jersey...the one in New Jersey is a shorter ride. Jersey Gardens has so many stores and there are many bargains to be had. Your teens will definitely find what they're looking for. If you don't want to leave the city try one of the K-Mart's for jeans and tee shirts. They don't stock designer items, but they do have a "teen" clothes section. K-Mart is kind of like the U.K.'s Woolies. Woodbury Commons and Jersey Gardens have websites so you can see the stores available to you.

Try Century 21 in the financial district and for fun and good bargains (mostly jewelry, purses, t-shirts, sunglasses & watches) go to Canal Street

Century 21 is a wonderful store, but even there the designer clothes are probably financially out of reach for a teenager looking for a trendy look. My 15 year old niece has never left Jersey Gardens empty handed and it's amazing the number of outfits she leaves with for about $150.00.

For cheap bargains H&M and Strawberry.

I take my 16 yr. old daughter shopping in Chinatown for purses and accessories.<BR>You can't beat the prices for designer fakes. The we go to the Village for vintage clothing... though it's a bit pricey for used stuff I tossed years ago! A few weeks ago she bought a classic vintage 60's bowling shirt. It was 40.00USD but it is MUCH cuter than the replicas at the department stores.<BR><BR>

With Canal St, HMS, Century 21 and all the great small shops and boutiques in NYC, there is really no need to leave the city for bargains.<BR>Have a great shopping time!

H&M originated in Europe and there are numerous locations throughout the U.K. so they probably won't want to shop at the one in the city.

I think the prices in the city's vintage shops are ridiculous. Antique Boutique, Screaming Mimi's, Reminiscence, and Cheap Jack's are a few that come to mind. Most teens aren't going to be able to afford shopping in these stores. Even the Salvation Army and Goodwill have become expensive in terms of what you are buying. You can do better at the clearance racks of stores such as Old Navy and at least they're new items. I'm originally from the London area and I can tell you that the average teen from a working class family isn't going to be able to afford Century 21 either, or at least not get as much if they had gone to a place like Jersey Gardens even with the price of the bus ticket.

Loehmann's is my favorite. Designer clothes at discount prices. I've gotten everything from French Connection to Betsy Johnson at a fraction of the price.

Run straight to Canal Jeans 504 Broadway

Broadway, a few blocks north and south of Houston, has tons of stores that sell exactly what you're looking for. I just got some cool Pumas there. My sister recently visited and went nuts over Urban Outfitters.

Am I the only one who doesn't know what a "trainer" is?

Trainers=Sneakers, tennis shoes, cross trainers, Nike's, etc.

I went to the states with my family in June and we stayed at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. A service clerk at the hotel told us she shopped at a mall in New Jersey named Jersey Gardens. We walked to Port Authority and I think we took bus # 111. It was a very fast ride. I had $300.00 USD I had put aside for a shopping spree and I wound up buying a $10.00 tube bag to bring all my goodies back. My favorite stores there were Old Navy, Gap, Forever 21, Bebe, Deb, and Mandee. We were there when it opened at 10 and we were back at the hotel by 3. We had fun eating all kinds of food there. That night we went out to dinner at Ruby Foo's and we saw The Lion King. We didn't think we had wasted a day and we all found great gifts to bring back home.
