Teenage Appropriate Attire for Nyc

I am a 16 Year Old and my grade is taking a trip to NYC in late may/early June. We will be in central park and Times Square most of the day, so I was wondering what people have seen others wear in NYC at that time. If you have any suggestions, let me know. I'm. 5'3 by the way, in case that helps!

Teens will wear anything. Best is trendy. Kids tend to wear a lot of jeans and a lot of black. May wear ballet flats, sneakers (red converse?) and it will likely be too hot for booties. Just make sure everything is comfortable since you wil be walking long distances.

Not sure what your height has to do with anything so can't help there. What do you wear at home in the warmer,spring/early summer months?

Are you male or female?

My granddaughters wear skirts when they go to the city, not too short, (think Abercrombie) if we're going to a show. When it's hot they wear shorts, not too short. If it's not too hot they wear skinny jeans. They all wear Tom's shoes. Have you seen them? Very comfortable flats. And they bring their cell phones or ipods. That's about it. Oh, and lip gloss. Stuff a light sweater in a bag in case it gets cool on a boat or at night. Have fun!

Oh, and last year brightly colored skinny jeans were spotted on teens in the city. Not sure what the thing to have is for this season, but nobody, except for the people you're travelling with, will notice nor care what color jeans you're wearing.

I'm a female! And I added my height in case there are certain clothes that look better for my height since things like maxi dresses are a bit harder for me to wear because of my height. Thanks for the suggestions!

I think that light weight jeans, a short sleeve top and comfortable shoes will blend in well. Skinny jeans seem to still be popular. If it is really hot, a cotton skirt instead of the jeans.

Hi Hannah, First of all, I'm impressed that as a 16 year old you were savvy enough to find this forum, and want to plan for your trip. My 17 year old daughter just got back from a school sponsored trip to New York last week and loved it, so we are going back as a family this summer. Although it is winter, so any specific clothes recommendations she would have would be useless for your early summer trip, she did tell me that her overall impression was that people were dressed fashionably. She didn't buy anything special for this trip, but seemed to pack things that were sort of nicer casual, like nicer jeans, colored jeans, and nicer tops. She thought things like sneakers and northface fleece were too casual. For shoes, she wore sperry's and low heeled boots, but for you boots will be too warm that time of year, just thought I'd mention it to give you an overall feel for the type of clothes. There are many people who will tell you that clothes are unimportant when you travel, but that is their opinion, maybe not yours! I like to have fun with my clothes when I travel, so I like to know what's what before I go, just like you! I hope you have a wonderful time, and many happy future travels! pp

I think the key is knowing what you're doing in Central Park and Times Square. If you'll be playing baseball or rowing in a boat or anything like that in CP, dress accordingly. It doesn't sound like you'll be going to a show or a restaurant that would require certain attire so I'd worry about what's appropriate for the activities you'll be doing, not what NYers will be wearing. My guess is most of your classmates will wear jeans or other pants and tops. COMFORTABLE shoes is a must. I wouldn't worry about fashion. You'll see all sorts of get ups in NYC.

Several of my teen granddaughters have visited me in NYC in the summer. They wore short skirts and short shorts, except for Braodway shows, dinners out.

Check the weather and if it will be warm, shorts are good. Flats and sandals. Heels are not a good idea due to al the walking. You want cute comfort. If it will be cooler, then bring some jeans too. Like others suggest, a skirt will work too. Agree with my traveler.
