Tea Partiers - Coming to DC for the Glenn Beck rally?

A great way to commemorate the anniversary of MLK's "I have a dream" speech...

Here's a helpful guide:

http://paintmainered.ning.com/profil...ing-to-the-828

Important highlights:

Safety and Mores

DC's population includes refugees from every country, as the families of embassy staffs of third world countries tend to stay in DC whenever a revolution in their homeland means that anyone in their family would be in danger if they went back. Most taxi drivers and many waiters/waitresses (especially in local coffee shops like the Bread and Chocolate chain) are immigrants, frequently from east Africa or Arab countries. As a rule, African immigrants do not like for you to assume they are African Americans and especially do not like for you to guess they are from a neighboring country (e.g. Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia) with whom they may have political or military tensions. It's rare to meet anyone who gets really offended, but you can still be aware of the issue.

Many parts of DC are safe beyond the areas I will list here, but why chance it if you don't know where you are?

If you are on the subway stay on the Red line between Union Station and Shady Grove, Maryland. If you are on the Blue or Orange line do not go past Eastern Market (Capitol Hill) toward the Potomac Avenue stop and beyond; stay in NW DC and points in Virginia. Do not use the Green line or the Yellow line. These rules are even more important at night. There is of course nothing wrong with many other areas; but you don't know where you are, so you should not explore them.

If on foot or in a cab or bus, stay in Bethesda, Arlington (preferably north Arlington), Crystal City, Falls Church, Annandale, or Alexandria, or in DC only in northwest DC west (i.e. larger street numbers) of 14th or 16th streets, or if on Capitol Hill only in SE Capitol Hill (zip 20003) between 1st and 8th Streets, not farther out than 8th (e.g. 9th, 10th etc). (Or stay on the Mall and at the various monuments.) Again there are many other lovely places, from the Catholic University of America to Silver Spring, Maryland. But you don't know where you are so you cannot go, especially at night, ..

Pretty wordy though, here is a much simpler VISUAL GUIDE:

I was trying to think of something to respond until I clicked on the map. Very helpful. Thanks

Poor MLK must be spining in his grave to hear that Glen Beck is commemorating his speech . . Kinda like Adolf Hitler speaking at a convention of Hassidic Jews . .

If they want to eat at Kommie's, I mean Komi's, they better get reservations.

I was with the Freedom March with Dr. King. Even though it will now be a physical hardship for me, I will also be at the Restoring Honor Rally. I love my country and it is time to stand up and show it.

obxgirl Aug 24th, 2010 08:10 AM

What is honor being restore to?

"EVENT DESCRIPTION
Throughout history America has seen many great leaders and noteworthy citizens change her course. It is through their personal virtues and by their example that we are able to live as a free people. On August 28, come celebrate America by honoring our heroes, our heritage and our future.

Join the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and many more for this non-political event that pays tribute to America’s service personnel and other upstanding citizens who embody our nation’s founding principles of integrity, truth and honor.

Our freedom is possible only if we remain virtuous. Help us restore the values that founded this great nation. On August, 28th, come join us in our pledge to restore honor at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC."

"If you are on the subway stay on the Red line between Union Station and Shady Grove, Maryland." This is perfectly idiotic advice; it is as safe as can be to get off the Red Line anywhere, especially on the downtown-to-Shady Grove branch.
"Do not use the Green line or the Yellow line." Equally stupid advice. But perhaps this crowd wants to avoid seeing such DC attractions as the Declaration of Independence, etc., at the National Archives, near the Archives station on the Green and Yellow lines.

Did you click on the map, kayd? It's pretty funny.

For a non-political rally, they sure have a good selection of right-wing politicians/political commentators.

>>Our freedom is possible only if we remain virtuous. Help us restore the values that founded this great nation.<<

Hmmm, interesting. I was unaware that we were no longer virtuous (or if we aren't, that virtue could be acquired or restored through a rally). It seems to me that the Republicans did far more to damage "the values that founded this great nation" during GWB's reign (and if the Elephant Echo Chamber is to be believed, are eager to do some more) than the Democrats, so I hope there will be a good Democratic turnout in support of our founding values, which the Democrats do in fact support to a much greater degree.

This is not a tea party rally according to the General Information Packet

DRJ: You lasted about 9 minutes, 30 seconds more than I did.

vjblovesitaly: No, it's a glorify-Glen-Beck rally.

" Restoring Honor" . . featureing an admited drug abuser and the most famous quitter in history . . This party is really on a roll!

emily71 Aug 24th, 2010 02:19 PM

I know they say it's non-political and all, but if it really is about restoring "honor" to our government, where were these people 8 years ago when the government pulled us into a phony war. Didn't see any of them praying around the White House then.

As for Mr. Beck, I thought it quite ironic that he mocked Olbermann's indignation in his piece about the cultural center opponents, since Glenn tears up at the mere mention of someone "dissing" America. Glass houses and all.
