Taxis on Maui
 

On the subject of Hawaiian daydreaming leading to micromanagement of stupid details:

We will be staying at the Kihei Surfside condos in July and are going to go to either the luau at the Renaissance Wailea or the nearby Outrigger one. Since we both want to get our mai tai on, neither one of us wants to drive. What's taxi service like in South Maui? Are they plentiful? I assume I will have to call for one (unless I can hail a passing dolphin), but will it be a long wait for it to arrive because there's not very many? We wouldn't be going very far, but out of curiosity, is it expensive?

I was trying to figure it out from a detail map, and don't laugh if this is just ridiculous, but it SEEMED like the Renaissance luau was less than a mile from the Kihei Surfside condo (which is at the northernmost tip of Keawakapu Beach)--is it possible to walk? I don't know if the road is a real highway or a street with sidewalk. Is this absurd? Am I insane?

sorry, I can't help you out...but I just wanted to say that we have a rental every day but are too interested in getting a cab from Kapalua to Lahaina for the Feast at Lele. any advice?

I know it is going to be expensive...I inquired about cab fare with a person from the Beach House on Kauai...we want to have a romantic dinner there and I'm sure lots of wine...well, the roundtrip cost would be $180 bucks (however, it is about an hour away....still)


roxy, when do you leave? We leave on Sunday for Vegas, but will be in Maui on Tuesday, woohoo!!!

We won't be in Maui until July...can anyone help out with this?

sorry can't help out with taxi ?. We are staying @ Kihei Surfside 12/2 thru 12/11. Let me know what you think about the place and which luau you go to. Enjoy the mai tai.

Come on, I'm begging here. I know boatloads of you have been to Maui, someone must know what the deal with taxis is. AND my stupid walking question!

Dear turniton, I understand micromanagement of details! We rented a car and have no experience with taxis on Maui, but I'm sure they are readily available. Have you considered calling the Renaissance or the Outrigger directly? I'm sure they can answer that question for you.

Yes, I think you just might be insane !

The Renaissance Wailea is about three miles from Kihei Surfside, a bit far too walk both ways. Getting a taxi in Maui is no different than anywhere else !!!

Make up your mind that you are going to take a taxi, and stop sweating the small stuff !!

I would imagine that a call to the 800 number of the Outrigger would be a quick way to get your answer.

We've just returned from Maui and drove through Kihei and Wailea one day, stopping here and there, swimming etc. I think it would be too far to walk. Just before you want to leave, I would ask the hotel to call you a cab. I would guess costs would be similar or a bit more expensive as on the mainland. Not a great deal to add to the cost of your night out and it means you can mai-tai the night away!

We were on Maui in February and used the bus system. One of the little freebie magazines had the schedule. There are 2 routes, and one goes to Kapalua and back to Lahaina, the other goes to Wailea and back to Lahaina. It stops at many hotels and spots of interest along the way (including the mall in front of the Old Lahaina Luau, the wharf in Lahaina where you could catch a dinner cruise, Hilo Hatties, etc). The cost is only $1 each way. We used the bus on an evening when we didn't want to worry about driving safely. It was fine, and the schedule ran until 11pm. I am sure your hotel would have or be able to get you a copy of the schedule.

Aloha Roxy - I've been to Maui about 12 times, sometimes by myself, & I don't drive. I usually stay in the Lahaina or Ka'anapali area & have never had a problem getting a taxi. I didn't really find them to be any more expensive than at home. You will definitely need some sort of transportation between the Kihei Surfside & Renaissance - much too far to walk! As I sais, I've never stayed in south Maui, but have spent time there, & don't think taxi service should be a problem.

I just got back from Maui and I drive the distance from the Kihei Surfside to the Renaissance Wailea just for you. It is exactly 1.2 miles one way with a sidewalk all the way. Decide for yourself if that is too far to walk. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes (30 minutes at most).

We just returned from Maui and used a taxi to go from the 4 seasons to a private home in Kihei. It was 3.9 miles and cost $9.50. The valet guys called for it for us, but I saw plenty of taxis on S. Kihei road going between Wailea and Kihei. Most are minivans. Have fun!
