Taxi or transfer - San Francisco 24th Dec

We (4 x adults with luggage) will be arriving at San Francisco International airport on 24th Dec. What is the best way to transport us and our luggage to the Hotel? Are taxis readily available at the airport? or would booking a transfer be better? Which is the best cost effective method? Any idea of costs to transfer us to Hotel in downtown San Francisco?

I have been 3 times in the last 2 months...the first time I took a cab from the airport to Post/Hyde for $36 with tip. Now I ride Bart for $5.15 one way and get off at Civic Center or Powell St. Station which is a nicer walk...depending on where you are going. You could always jump in a cab outside the train station if you can't walk with luggage to your hotel.

I agree with Wednesday. At which hotel are you staying?

If it is one right near Powell or Civic Ctr BART station, then BART at $5.15 is simple. Otherwise I'd just grab a taxi at SFO.

Tell us which hotel and we can tell you the distance from BART.

How much luggage? How used are the adults to public transportation? How good are they at walking from a BART station? At what time are you arriving? Where is the hotel?

Maybe the easiest is to take the first available door-to-door shuttle as a taxi may not accomodate 4 people and luggage.

From another post: Janmart is coming from Australia staying in the hotel on Sutter between Leavenworth and Hyde.

Well... at what time you land, and are all adults young and strong, can walk with the luggage being jetlagged?

Either take the first available shuttle to the downtown area, or BART and walk.

but $5.15 x 4 = $20.60 with lots of hassle versus $36 with no hassle. i would pay the extra $4 a piece for door to door convenience, especially after 15 hours flight.

i would never do the shuttle, that's a per person charge in a shared vehicle...the most expensive option of all for 4 together and then they still may have to wait for others!

if op wants to save every penny, then he/she should contact the hotel and ask them which bart line to disembark at and ask them what the taxi costs.

I agree with kerikeri as far as the cost for 4 vs taxi and the trouble you will save..the walk up Hyde is uphill and even with my backpack and one extra bag, I was huffing a little toward the end and that walk can be "colorful" especially if you are not familiar with that area..you do not want to drag your wheeled luggage along that route as you never know what those "puddles" are LOL...PLUS, if you are lucky like I was my first trip, I had a friendly driver who pointed out many places and history and it was a nice start to the trip in a new city.
