you already posted this question so you don't need to keep re-posting. Perhaps you would get responses if you had a better title. "taxi or car" gives NO IDEA where you are asking about.

Try "Is taxi or car better, Newark to Manhattan?" or something like that.

Jane, a taxi would be cheaper than car service, most likely in the $40 range. There's also a bus - Olympia Trails - that goes from EWR to Port Authority Bus Terminal on 8th & 42nd that costs about $11 per person.

Take a look at the Port Authority website: www.panynj.org/index.html and click on airport-related subjects until you get to Newark Airport. There you will find exact taxi fares and other info that may be helpful. Olympia Trails should have a website as well.

I actually posted a reply this afternoon; I'm surprised that it's not here, but it isn't, so I'll post again. I would suggest you take the bus from Newark to the Port Authority Terminal in Manhattan, and then take a taxi from there. I've done that a number of times and it worked out fine.

Taxi fares, from EWR are calculated on a zone basis. Taxi fares for going to the west side range from $34 to $51 in the west side area 14th St. to 185th St. Since you are going to the upper west side fare is going to be more than $34.
There is a $6 toll and tip is extra. Final cost will be in at least $45 or more. The airport bus is $11 a person and goes to 42nd and 8th Ave. A cab would then be needed to get to the upper west side. For two people traveling cost of bus and taxi will be at least $30 if you are going above 72nd Street.
If you are going to use a cab check with the dispatcher for cost and clarification on toll charges.. I read a report where the person said the cab driver requested the $6 toll each way. You only pay a toll when going to the city, not leaving the city.

One of the best recent additions to NYC is the brand-spanking new AirTran from Newark Airport, a monorail that takes you from your terminal to Newark Penn Station. From there you take the commuter train (more spacious and less crowded than the subway---except at rush hour) to New York Penn Station (34th St.). The whole trip takes about 20 minutes and costs $11. From Penn, take a taxi to the UWS.
