Taxi, car service or shuttle from San Jose to SanFran?

Need transportation recommendations from San Jose Airport to San Fran, on weekend, two people, luggage and golf clubs. Hope to avoid car rental and hotel parking. Train apparently doesn't run wknd.

Hi, ethanb!

You are correct, trains don't run on the weekends, except for a very abbreviated schedule. Check out the Caltrain site.

Or you could try going by Greyhound Bus, but you will have to take a taxi from the airport to the bus station which is downtown.

One other alternative is to search on the net for a shuttle company that will take you from SJ Airport into SF. This could run at least $20-$40 a person. There is an ever changing list of shuttle companies in San Jose.

Your best bet is still getting a car. Enterprise at the moment is renting their most basic car at $9.95 a day on the weekends. They also do pickup and dropoff, so if you have driven yourself into SF and want to return the car, you can opt to have them drive you back to your hotel from their rental office within the City. This would probably be the easiest and cheapest way for you to get from San Jose Airport into San Francisco...do a one-way, one day rental at $9.95, pickup at SJ airport and drop off in SF somewhere close to your hotel. Check them out. Generally pickup at San Jose Airport and dropoff in San Francisco is considered "local" and should not incur a dropoff fee.

Hope some other Fodorite has better information for you!

This is one of the problems w/ flying into SJ to save money and then finding out you are spending more by the time you add the expense of getting to SF. Most shuttles charge $40 to $50 pp, a taxi would be almost $100 inc. tip. So both are awfully expensive.

As jason888 says, a one way car rental will be a lot cheaper. Even if you don't use Enterprise w/ their pick-you-up service. if you use another company just choose one with an office near your hotel. Drop your companion and luggage off at the hotel, return the car, and walk back to the hotel (or take a taxi if it is too far to walk)

A shuttle to SF from San Jose will likely cost about $100 per person roundtrip. An even better option would be to take a Greyhound bus from San Jose to SF. From the airport a cab to the San Jose Greyhound station is about $10.

Appreciate the input. The enterprise car rental sounds like a superb choice.

Car rental sounds like the way to go. Another alternative would be to take a cab to the Fremont BART station. Fare from there to the Embarcadero is about $5/person. Don't know how much the cab ride would be though.

We once booked into San Jose and then changed our plans by wanting to go to San Francisco first. After much checking we ended up renting a car at San Jose airport for something like $38 and driving to downtown San Francisco and turning it in. Much cheaper than any of the other methods we could find.
