Taxi availability in Brooklyn Heights and Red Hook?

If I take the train to Borough Hall, should I expect to be able to hail a taxi to take me to Red Hook? And when I'm ready to go back, should I expect to be able to hail a taxi in Red Hook?

You can hail a cab = there will be a long line - when a ship docks in Red Hook. Otherwise that area is served by car services - not taxis. Finding a large number of taxis outside of Manhattan south of 96th St or the airports - is just not the way it works. Those ares are served by car services - either pick up on the street (main streets/intrsections) or call and reserve.

Where are you going in Red Hook?

There is also a bus that goes up Van Brunt. You can catch the 61 at Joralemon and Boerum Place.

We have done this dozens of time. It is real hit and miss.
Go to Court Street. There will be some on Boerum Place/Adams Street but most are heading back to the City on the Brooklyn Bridge.

If you need car service coming back call

Good tips, I thank you both. It looks like, to come back from Red Hook, I should plan on either taking the B61 or calling a car service.

Just to clarify: Aduchamp1, I think you meant that I may (or may not) have some success hailing a yellow cab around Borough Hall by walking over to Court Street, was that right?

Sorry Hawsbill, that is correct.

And if you really get stuck there are all sorts of transportation in front of IKEA, depending on the time of day. And behind it is the water ferry that is free on weekends.

We belonged to an art coop whose main exhibition space is at the end of Van Brunt, thus we are familar with all the vagaries of the neighborhood.
