Taos; unique, not close to town place to stay
 

I hope someone who knows NM can advise me. I am trying to decide between spending a night right before Memorial Day (sudden decision for my sister and I to go to my nephews high school graduation) in Ojo Caliente to take in and enjoy the waters in the evening and next day. I am also planning to spend a day in Taos, so need to make a decision to stay the night in Ojo or Taos.

After spending a great deal of time researching Taos places to stay, nothing is really exciting me. I do NOT want to be "close to town"; I am looking for something that is sort of remote and unique. I would love a place that has a fire outside at night where people gather, or a native gives a talk, etc.. I know that probably is not a reasonable expectation. But, don't want just a B & B, a place to stay. I would like the place to be more of a destination that has something more than a nice room and a good breakfast. Any suggestions of a nice spot in the Taos mountains that is away from town and really special? I hope this isn't a confusing request. It's just that I keep seeing descriptions of B and B"s that all sound pretty much standard B and B's; some nicer, some better hosts, better food. At least at Ojo I have the pools to use whenever I wish.

Mabel Dodge Luhan House is a destination as well as a place to stay. While it is in town, the large grounds (around 12 acres) gives you the feel of open spaces surrounded by towering cottonwoods. Mabel Dodge Luhan was quite the character and a big part of Taos history.

Thank you to those who replied, thank you. I have decided to stay overnight at Ojo Caliente after the day in Taos. My sister really wants to take us to Love Apple for an early dinner before we head off. I am looking forward to being in the pools at Ojo in the dark.

Love Apple is ok but there are much better places in Taos for dinner.

DebitNM, what is your favorite in Taos? She tells me how much I will love Love Apple.

For New Mexican - Orlando's is great with lovely outdoor tables.

High End place - Lambert's

Medium priced - Graham's Grill

Ooh, I love Orlando's eating outside, very cool! We went there last May.

Ditto Deb's rec's, especially Lambert's and Graham's. Skip Michael's Kitchen for New Mexican in town. It's been very mediocre the last couple of times. Orlando's is a fun atmosphere, too.

If you want to be adventurous, there is a Mexican place on the NE corner of the highway to the ski area at the light. You can't miss it as there are velvet Elvis paintings sold from a truck on the corner by it. They have the best carne adovada burritos!

Beachie, Old Blinking Light?

Nope, the Mexican place is a dive on the right-hand side on HWY 64 before you turn right on HWY 150 to go up the mountain (Old Blinking Light would be on the left after the turn onto HWY 150). Conoco is across the street where you turn left for the Gorge Bridge. Mexican place is very small with only ?6 tables and a walk-up order bar inside. Very small.

Toribios is the name.

Headed up to Taos in a few weeks, will have to stop in and check it out.
