Taos Ski Valley - how difficult?

Good afternoon everyone!
We're leaving for northern New Mexico tomorrow. We have a house in Red River and have skiied there many, many times. We've also skiied at Angel Fire & Santa Fe. I've always shied away from Taos as I've heard for years what a difficult mountain it is. I'm extremely comfortable on green slopes and comfortable on the easier of the blue slopes (hope that makes sense). For those of you who have skiied at Taos, could you share your experiences? Thanks for the help.

The word out there is they are getting more snow than they have had in 50 yrs. I'm not a skier but have been to Taos and it is beautifull. Many people say if you can ski Taos you can ski anywhere. Its pretty steep!

I live in NM and while it has been a few years since I've skied, I have skied at Taos. I was a good intermediate skier (blue runs w/out lots of moguls). You can find runs like this at Taos, there just aren't as many of them. Also, the area by the base is very steep and intimidating - go to the back side and you will find some good runs. The powder should be great now. Just remember that Taos does not allow snow boarding - skis only! Have fun! Kellye

So glad to hear that Taos still does skis only!! Fond memories of a trip there >10 years ago. It is one of the nicest ski areas I know, b/c it still has (or had back then) a really homey quality to it. We loved it and found many appropriately intermediate runs, that were not overly scary at all. And the fact that you do not have to watch for snow boarders makes it even better.

I've heard about how steep the base area is. How do non-expert skiers get down to the base? Downloading? Is there a non-double black trail to the bottom? I've looked at the trail map online but it's still hard to judge. Thanks!
