Tanning, Poppers and Smoke

In sailing, one always looks to local knowledge. Same holds for the other pursuits in the sunshine capital east of T. I can already feel the breeze and hear the surf, but can I see the road? Ciao.

Janet May 24th, 2001 07:25 AM

I'd suggest NOT using the poppers and smoking whatever it is that you smoke BEFORE writing free association Lewis Carroll drivel at a site dedicated to travel discussion.

Olive Oyl May 24th, 2001 07:51 AM

Sorry Janet, you misinterpreted the poppers. LOL! Those are shrimp poppers, (breaded fried shrimp stuffed with cheese and jalpenos) you of the evil mind, straight from the kitchens at Woody's Waterside. Furthermore, L *is* traveling to get them and looking for local news on the fires here. Do we hear apologies from Janet? <BR> <BR>It is pretty smokey L, worse yesterday than today as there was a north wind, carrying it right down from Perry, I guess it is, a couple hundred miles away. It was thick and smelly here but *much* improved today. Another fire by Orlando is almost out as of today. <BR> <BR>So, tanning index is high again and winds perfect, plus that cool front that produced the north winds yesterday also took some of the humidity out of the air so it feels more comfortable. High 80's through the weekend, not a chance of rain (unfortunately). Can't even remember when it rained last. It looks very dry...you'll notice as you drive over. Even TX appeared green while I was there...it's all in what you've become used to! <BR> <BR>We have stuff going on Saturday but otherwise, we'll be out there too over the long weekend. Our friend Capt Bob is supposed to be giving us a spinnaker lesson Sunday...still haven't figured out how to keep that thing flying but if you see an inverted V striped spinnaker, oranges, yellows, flying around the Don...it be us.

Ginny May 24th, 2001 07:55 AM

Olive-I thought you seasoned sailors knew how to get the Spinnaker up! :0) We'll send some rain down from the midwest, we are drowning up here. Watch out for the boom and have a great weekend.

L May 24th, 2001 08:12 AM

Janet - Honestly, it's so age discriminatory to suggest one dribbles ... I never dribble, never, never ... oh ... drivel ... never mind. But thanks, OO, for that welcomed defense ... it's getting so one cannot do a good Joycean stream of consciousness without being called to task for free association. Speaking of which, how about that Jeffords really pulling the ole rabbit out of the hat (I'm sorry, Janet, but how about that Lewis, Carol? :&gt;&gt;). Our hearing was cancelled this morning by the "old" Senate committee chairman. Goodbye Richard Shelby, hello Patty Murray. Hey, as you pass the Don, drop the sails and I'll throw a few umbrellas off their roof, or other suitable action. Perhaps even a belly flash (man those shades!) If Capt. Bob can help you beach that baby, come on in for a grog, Sailor. Ciao.

Chuck May 24th, 2001 08:18 AM

L-After a couple of grogs you just might dribble! <BR> <BR>And Olive-I hope your Capt. Bob isn't the same one I know from Naples! That Capt. Bob is a lecherous old coot.

L May 24th, 2001 08:35 AM

Chuck, are you getting overheated by Ginny's metaphors? And I thought the midwest was land locked. Have a memorable one, all, and hank one on. Ciao

Suzie May 24th, 2001 08:44 AM

Ok someone enlighten me. Does LOL mean "little old lady", "lots of laughs" "lots of luck" or something entirely different. I see this alot here and can not pinpoint exactly which it is. Thanks so much.

F of L May 24th, 2001 09:46 AM

LOL - Supposedly Laughing Out Loud, but preferably Lots of Love, or so it means at times.

Suzie May 24th, 2001 09:52 AM

Thanks F of L. I appreciate the education. I've heard "laughing out loud". Do that often myself.

L for F May 24th, 2001 10:27 AM

And often you'll see :&gt;&gt;&gt; ... a specialty of Mrs. Oyl, a world class poster who fairly emanates the Fodors spirit. Slow to rile, except in traffic. She deserves to be featured on a new FL plate ... given the value of tourism to FL. Fodors should petition Jeb. Have a good weekend, and ciao.

hehe May 24th, 2001 01:47 PM

OO, Leone - which one is the other's alter ego? You ladies crack me up with your cute codes and glowing compliments to each other. Keep 'em coming--otherwise we'll get bored.

Olive Oyl May 24th, 2001 02:57 PM

hehe...."ladies"?? Leone will not be happy about that. LOL ONE of us is, but it isn't Leone. Leone would have some cryptic remarks to make about now, but alas, boredom will have to set in, as he's high in the air. <BR> <BR>Suzie...there are more where that came from. Here's another--ROTFL (you can get it) sometimes with a MAO attached to the end of that--it's an extreme form of LOL. DH=dear husband, below. <BR> <BR>Now talk about coded remarks, Ginny, er...:&gt; DH and I don't even need a whisker pole to fly it...LOL! It always seemed like a lot of work though for a short downwind tack. <BR> <BR>Chuck...Capt Bob is a lecherous coot alright, (he is a sailor after all) but not old, and not Naples.

Janet May 24th, 2001 05:14 PM

We old lesbians sometimes buy our knickers a little too tight, I'm afraid. <BR>Back when I was a young chick about town poppers were used to enhance one's appetite, not to satiate it, if you know what I mean. Since I'm now considering a run at the governorship I'm trying to stay hip and focused on the youth culture. (You know, they used to call me the 'Church Lady' on the Hill....blasted Carvey character; I'd like to squash him like a bug!).

joan May 24th, 2001 06:02 PM

OO & Suzie: I get it!!! I get it!!! thanks for the hint! ummm...I just can't resist spelling it out: Rolling on the Floor Laughing. ...and oh yeah, My *ss Off! <BR>Thanks - I was always too shy to ask before, but your hint was just the thing! <BR>OO, I'll look for you from my under my umbrella on Sunset Beach (rainbow stripes, just north of the gay beach!) Love those spinnakers! <BR> <BR>Happy Memorial Day, all!

Brenda May 24th, 2001 06:44 PM

Hey joan: <BR>you know the old saying, "give a (wo-)man a fish and (s-)he'll eat for a day...) <BR>well, pop this address into your favorites file: <BR>www.netlingo.com <BR> <BR>there's a 'search' box on the opening page. you may plug in all the acronyms and net lingo you can think of and find out their real meanings. <BR>happy eating....

Leone May 29th, 2001 12:11 PM

Well, Joan, this may or may not please you, but we're neighbors ... Sunset Beach is the best!! Try 78th Ave. near the new pavillion. It was wonderful beach weather this past weekend, and they were serving drinks late at the Tiki (FKA Nick's). I bet you were in the stroll! My plane arrived late Thursday night, and Tiki was just the place for some cool ones in the late night air. Ciao, L

SharonM May 29th, 2001 04:35 PM

Janet, don't feel badly. <BR>Quite frankly, I was thinking along the same lines you were...Perhaps I've spent too much time west of T, towards NO... <BR>Olive, thanks for clearing the smoke out of my eyes. Somehow, you made L's post a bit clearer to me... (THOSE poppers (yum!) and THAT smoke!) I was still trying to figure out where the tan part came in before your response. <BR> <BR>(lol)

Leone May 30th, 2001 05:37 AM

Yes, Sharon, Olive is butter at clarifying than anyone, I suspect. Just a great sailor person. Ciao.

SharonM May 30th, 2001 06:41 AM

Okay, Leone. <BR> <BR>clarifying butter... are you testing me or was that just a teeny typo? <BR> <BR>'cause if it's ghee you're talking about, I caught on!!! (can't pull the wool over my eyes THIS time!) <BR> <BR>(happy sails!)

L May 30th, 2001 06:56 AM

Ghee, :&gt;, you caught me, Sharon. BTW, Olive is a TERRIFIC person ... about that there's no wool. And OO is the sailor ... for L, it's happy sales, strictly a land-locked cat invited aboard ... couldn't stay long ... no dramamine. So, who knows whom we shall know in the future ... but did think this an oopportunity to set eyes on a class act exemplifying the Fodors spirit. Take care, e ciao. Leone

OliveOyl May 30th, 2001 08:15 AM

Ghee, you all...you need a dictionary to get through these notes! Perhaps you see why, if I do a Fodorite dinner in Tampa, we'll have to wait for Leone to pay another visit? I'll wager he didn't look that up. He and my DH (who I have pledged can duplicate Berns steaks with his eyes closed) will be my main chefs as both are *far* more talented than OO in that dept. Moi, I stand on the bow and direct the flow. :&gt; <BR> <BR>Leone is too kind and most cool in poi-son too (as OO would say). But he lies like a sailor, for whomever has been entrusted with the care of a Tartan, a $$$$ beauty, even briefly, must be the real deal! For the most part, this is a great group and it'd be fun meeting others whose names we've become familiar with. <BR> <BR>Heck, maybe we'll expand the scope to a regional meeting..Sharon Panhandle, Patrick Naples, CaptKirk ?,etc included as well as locals Sal and Joan, plus NYer Howard who started this whole thing with his doubts about us duplicating the Berns experience. (My husband thanks me for that pressure, btw :&gt;) <BR> <BR>My vision for this grows as we speak: how about a raft-up in the bay, Dramamine at no cost? Or, maybe I'll throw in the towel, we'll move it to Woodys and get back to the basics...tanning and poppers. Not sure you'd want a tour of their kitchen but I can guarantee a great waitstaff! <BR> <BR>

Ginny May 30th, 2001 08:19 AM

Hey O, count me in! I'll fly down from Ohio. And, I want to meet the infamous Capn Bob.

woody May 30th, 2001 08:37 AM

My salutation to L ... on the 25th he had the cheese-filled poppers, not the shimpies. :&lt;&lt; Someone failed to warn him not all poppers are created equal! Last we saw he was burning rubber in that rental headed over to SS Beach for Nick's, then to Gulf Port. Busy day, but interesting, I think.

SharonM May 30th, 2001 01:10 PM

I'm impressed, Ollie! <BR>(...You knowing/remembering I live in Pensacola...very impressed indeedee!) <BR> <BR>Anyway, a Florida get-together, here or there sounds great! Sounds like perfect fun! I can do food preparation, but we'll leave the cooking to your hubby...or Cptn. Bob...

SharonM May 30th, 2001 01:12 PM

(Ooops...) <BR> <BR>Also very impressed that you use a dictionary... <BR> <BR>Ghee! <BR> <BR>

Sal May 30th, 2001 03:05 PM

OO- <BR>If you're DH's husband has a Camp Hyatt, we'll make it a long weekend. Otherwise, my youngest can be the entertainment.

Sal May 30th, 2001 03:06 PM

Oops OO, made it sound like your DH has a husband himself.

Ummm May 30th, 2001 09:41 PM

Care to fill in the rest of us? What in the hell are you people talking about!?

asdfasdf May 31st, 2001 04:38 AM

Thank god there's no Fodor's chatroom; this is bad enough! Can't you guys just e-mail each other?

Leone May 31st, 2001 05:45 AM

Please, Ummm and asdfasdt, surely you recognize when people are communicating about getting together to celebrate the Fodor experience, good company and a travelling life in general. What the hell are they talking about, you ask. Why don't they just send an e-mail, you ask. Well, you know the former, and the latter is too obvious to address. So, play nice, and maybe they'll invite you along to share in the merriment and wonder of going beyond mere hotel, airplane and restaurant talk. Wow, I think it's going to be a party in FL ... hosted by the OO of the sailing world, ably assisted by the DH, Ginny, Sal, SharonM, and who knows who else might appear. I'm hoping for a full report on the event, and I'll bet it's a huge success. Have a good day, e ciao.

joan May 31st, 2001 02:09 PM

Hey guys! Thanks OO & L for counting me in! Yes, L, isn't SS great? Maybe we could begin the party underneath my stilt house, with swimming and BBQ...I own a local seafood place, so the shrimp is on me! <BR> <BR>I'll have to check back with you all in about 12 days, as I'm off with hubby and 3 other couples on an Alaskan cruise! No sweat! YESSSSSSSSSSSS! What a life! :)

L/Leone Jun 1st, 2001 09:45 AM

Hey, Joan of Sunset Beach, tell me about your shrimp place ... I'm headed down in a month or so and I love shrimp. I'm on stilts too, about 200 feet from the beach. Yes, SSB is just terrific. OO is a bit east of us, but just a short drive, and a terrific person. Have a great time on your cruise ... Alaska sounds great!!!! Hope you find this message upon your return. I have friends at Il Tucano, on TI near Johns Pass ... ask the owners, they'll tell you who I am and give you an e-mail address ... just say I'm Lino's friend in DC, and we drank all the red wine May 27. They'll remember!!! LOL. Ft. DeSoto will never be the same. This is all for real. I realize it sounds a bit nutty. Ciao

J T Kirk Jun 1st, 2001 10:10 AM

What in the heck have I wandered into? <BR>This IS Fodors.COM, isn't it? Travel related stuff?

SharonM Jun 1st, 2001 10:26 AM

Cptn. Kirk, <BR> <BR>I think it's about people traveling, meeting new/real people and experiencing the really neat things that happen when you do those things. <BR> <BR>Get it now?

Leone Jun 1st, 2001 11:10 AM

Yes, SharonM, bless your heart ... you get it!!!! May I tell you Olive is just super ... the It. cat knows now for sure. And one of these days, I believe OO will host an event, and I believe you're on the list. As is Joan ... with whom I shall be sharing the beach one of these days. Can you believe, we'll be neighbors. And when I'm down there and entertaining, I am giving my address and an open invitation to all the folks on Fodors who keep an open heart and mind. It's about travel alright, but ultimately it's about people. You get it!!! Ciao

Smart *** Jun 1st, 2001 12:07 PM

I don't like poppers when I'm tanning. The cheese and jalapenos ooze out, and it gets messy. Usually prefer them deep-fried, not smoked. <BR>

Chuck Jun 1st, 2001 12:56 PM

Hey L-Did I miss something? Are you going to get outta the rat race and become a beach bum?
